The Rich Kids of Instagram: A Worthy Disaster

ChaseJarvis_RichKidsInstagram_AmyRollo-samuelfastlicht

From the G6 to the yacht to the private island. by samuelfastlicht

When you combine youth, unlimited cash and iPhone technology, you get braggadocios photographic evidence of a lavish lifestyle.  Also known as the Rich Kids of Instagram.  At first glance, this Tumblr is so ridiculously over the top it’s laughable. But a deeper look reveals for me some cultural sadness…privileged kids posting bar tab receipts that cost more than four years of college at a private university and talking shit about it. Depending on your mood – it can be entertaining or awful.

But if art (or curation) is aimed to send a message, make a claim, create a reaction, my take is that this tumblr is worthy of your time – even if it’s to feel the weirdness.

—
Side note, here’s an interesting article: On Raising Kids Who Seem to Have it All by Peggy Drexler. Peggy is writing a book about the impact of wealth on childrearing.  She has a more empathetic outlook on these kids:

As absurd as it might sound to many, it’s not easy being a rich kid. Their parents tend to have high expectations. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your daughter to go to the best school, but you also want her to learn to be a good person, and encouraging achievement over character-building can mean kids never quite figure out who they are. They think their money is their most notable quality. And so they learn to use it — to buy affection, or friends.

For the rest of us, peering in on this group of not just the “1 percent”, but the one 1/100 of a %, there is an escape to a life of private jets, yachts, and more…either as a dream, or a nightmare. In both cases – worth the look.

And when money is no object, convenience is king. That’s why private jet ownership isn’t just a flex; it’s a lifestyle essential. Whether hopping between European fashion weeks or escaping to a private island for the weekend, unparalleled access to air travel is a non-negotiable.

Programs like BlackJet Reserve offer instant, hassle-free bookings for those who demand efficiency, while Equity Fleet provides a more tailored fractional ownership experience for those who want something truly personal. Because in this world, waiting in line at an airport is simply not an option.

While some opt for full ownership, others prefer more flexible solutions like jet cards, which grant access to a fleet without the commitment of a single aircraft. For those considering this route, this article explains NetJets jet card cost, breaking down how elite travelers can secure seamless flights without the burdens of maintenance and management. Because when life moves at 40,000 feet, the only real concern is choosing which champagne to sip at takeoff.

I do not see anything wrong about these people taking photos of themselves in their environment. You think that only people with average income can post pictures from their daily routine? Our routine is different because we do not have that money but i do not think that being poor is somehow more ethical that being rich. When you take picture of your Starbucks coffee that can also be interpreted as insult to African man, for whom the price of your coffee maybe is food money for all day. Our simple apartments may seem to be castles for some people, so it is all about perspective. And that “Africa argument” is quite dubious because the money that those people are spending (especially for products with high markup like in bars) means profit for other people and it is staying in USA or in other countries economy, but if you will pour those 150.000 in Sudan, they will vanish in bottomless pit before you know it. You can not force other people to care about things they do not care – Africa for example. I do not have millions but i admit that i could donate at least 500$ per year to Sudanese children but i am not doing it because i do not care. I am spending that money drinking beer with friends – is that a thing i could not live without? Of course not, but in liberal democracy it is your rights to spend your money as you like. The same with those people – they could but why should they (and maybe they do, we can not know that)? I agree that a lot of those pictures are simply “cheap”, banal and tasteless, however, as far as we admit that liberal democracy is a way to go, it is their way of being and while they are not doing anything illegal there is no reason to accuse them of anything else than just acting tasteless but poor people can also act the same. I think it is more healthy to look for options how to improve your own material situations than to downgrade that of others.

There are fit people that post pictures of their bodies, yet we don’t critique their process of getting to that. Because in one way or another we know that the only limitation set forth that prevents us from having a healthy body is our individual motivation to cut off unhealthy meals and live a more active lifestyle. When it comes to money though, we seem to be able to come up with all the justification in the world to support our judgement of who in our perception is flaunting it. It’s easy to see images of a lavish lifestyle and pass judgement onto others based on our sense of reality while at the same time ignoring that we carry the same social responsibility as the person posting a check for $100k just at a different scale. We get so high and mighty of photos of Ferraris and expensive watches and we say “how can they just flaunt their wealth like that” well, my question is why do those images cause you such an outrage?! Why aren’t we taking the same time to write to our political leaders and express how disgusted we are with the images of dying people do to wars in the name of god, oil, national interest, etc. and I’m not just talking about deaths outside of the US I’m talking right here in our own back yards. These kids aren’t born into wealth, we created them. We produced and continue to produce these false icons by way of the consumeristic society in which we are a part of.
