Hey there y'all, Dartanyon here making a guest post appearance... In this installment of [my] Essential Gear, I'd like to talk about something I don't leave home without: my travel drive. A travel drive is an external hard drive filled to the brim with the software, tools, and settings, that are so often overlooked as part of location computer setups. There are several scenarios where you may need to carry one of these, perhaps you're traveling without... read more ›

[Scott here...and welcome to the second post in a series of three discussing the steps we take in selecting and scouting locations for our most important photo and video shoots. In the first post in this series we discussed the process of narrowing in on your locations with computers...."virtual scouting". Now we'll tackle something a bit less concrete...that great mystery in the sky...no I'm not talking about God, I'm talking about the WEATHER.] The weather... read more ›

Whenever I give a talk or host a show, I've heard from this community time and again that one of the most valuable things is the Q&A wrap up. Straight up. You asking questions and me doing my best to answer them. And not just the "how'd you get started in photography" questions.... we're talking the hard questions, landing clients, hiring staff, working with challenging clients, legal questions, gear questions, portfolio questions, whatever you can... read more ›

I originally started traveling to New Zealand for commercial photo and video work. Visually, there are few place on earth that exude the beauty of that place AND it has the benefit of being opposite seasonally (opposite hemisphere) from most of the brands/agencies etc that I work for. Great 6 month lead time for campaign creation, media buying, etc. It's geographically very dense with variety as well. It's a home run for productions. As such... read more ›

-------- Note: NO, we didn’t have too much eggnog and accidentally re-publish a post from just before the holidays... We did, however, get a TON of reader requests from a lot of y'all who are using less and less Photoshop, and asked Scott if he could get similar results in Aperture or Lightroom. Short answer is YES. To that end, Scotty re-worked... read more ›

I didn't grow up dreaming to be a photographer. I didn't assist for anybody. I just started doing it... The way I do it is just the way I do it.Beautiful piece here about Scott Schumann, aka The Sartorialist. In the unlikely event you're not familiar with his work, he's an ex-fashion guy turned street photographer. Plenty to be learned here for any creative discipline. Brilliant, simple style. Confident in his vision. Living... read more ›

I love how opinionated this community is. There is no right, no wrong - just a good bit of discussion... In case you're lost, I promised to follow up this earlier popular Which Photo is Better A or B? post. The discussion on these is always spirited--in this case the post received more than 1000 comments in 24 hours--of which I read them all. A breakdown by numbers, my particular take (it was different than... read more ›

[Reminder: Since each of my staff are experts in their own right, you’ll be seeing more and more posts from these talented people in weeks and months to come. Today, Erik--our video guru--takes you on a ride down the HDdSLR road to extol yet another reason he loves this cool new format. (It also is a pretty fun recall of some fun behind-the-scenes moments from 2010.) Take it away Erik...] My interest in becoming a... read more ›
