Snapshots of the Famous by the Famous

There is a raw, metaphysical power in snapshots that cannot be denied. Throughout my career I have been hired or commissioned to create very specific technical photos. There are lights and crews and mechanics involved - and while it's incredibly creative - it's also complicated. There is a purity and undeniable power in a snapshot. I recently came across these stunning snapshots (via Flavorwire), spanning 50... read more ›

Inspiring New York City Time Lapse: The Manhattan Project

I'm headed back to New York city this week. The city has a unique way of pushing photographers and filmmakers to be more creative. The constant pulse of visual inspiration is motivational. My own work has been given the occasional Big Apple boost - in fact, it was just one year ago that I wrapped up my Dasein: An Invitation to Hang installation at the Ace Hotel. The mini-doc and some of my conclusions on... read more ›

An Interview I hope You’ll Read [Yours Truly in Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine]

I normally don't post or link to my mainstream media coverage here on the blog--not necessarily because of the perceived horn tooting, but primarily because a lot of those articles are just sort of vapid, empty whitewashes with little depth and even less bite. That said, I was just featured in the December issue of Juxtapoz Magazine - one of my favorite art & culture mags, one that I actually buy when I see it... read more ›

When The Music Matters–Interview with Commercial Composer McKenzie Stubbert

McKenzie Stubbert in Studio 2
Erik here...As the resident video editor here at Chase Jarvis Inc, I’m on a never ending search for music. Often times the music drives the edit. The rhythm of the music can have a huge influence on the pace for the cuts and the mood can make a hilarious moment tragic. In other instances I get the luxury of having custom music created which is based on my edit of the footage. When that opportunity... read more ›

Gear Details: How We Shot “Dasein: Art of Being” Documentary

NYC street doc setup
Hey friends.  Erik the video guy here. We’ve had a bunch of YOUR questions come in about what gear/process/technique we used to make the Dasein docu-short we posted a couple days ago so I thought I’d chime in with a quick gear- and technique-specific follow up on how this film was made.  First, Chase was the director on the project but wanted to remain focused simply on the overall look and feel. Plus, since he... read more ›

What I Learned From An Experiment in Creative Living

You have certainly heard this from me before, but the more I think about it, study it, and live it, the more I can say definitively that the photographic snapshot has quietly emerged as one of our culture's--if not the world's--most unsung creative heroes. (Here's some deeper explanation.) This little film is an exploration and summary of some thoughts and personal experiences, having just recently carved out a month to live with the... read more ›

Photo Of The Day: Eat the Street, NYC

Captured this on the streets of NYC during Dasein artist in residency last May. [BTW, I'll be showing a lot of new work in this manner over the coming weeks and months. Voicing your opinions on this or any image in the future is welcomed. Thanks.] Continue reading

Dasein Achieving Milestones — More Excitement To Come

Whew. Just a quick note to update you on the Dasein: Invitation To Hang installation and project. In short, it's still going gangbusters. The definition of gangbusters is open for interpretation, but here's a few things I know: _The quality of the work you've sent in is amazing, inspirational, and exciting. It breeds optimism of what thousands of talented photographers can create together. _Hundreds of truly amazing images are still pouring in everyday from professional... read more ›

Four Fab Photos. Do you have a fav?

Looking at more than 1000 images a day is a real treat. And pulling out 100 to 200 each day for printing is even cooler. It's sort of like dipping my hand in a river at any one time, and being able to pull out a slice of life. Here's four of the 150 I pulled out today. Props to their respective creators, listed below. A broad spectrum - but that's what I love. Lemme... read more ›
