In this week’s episode, I take two questions that any creator or business owner should consider.

First, Anisha wants to know how to handle the experience of having someone you’ve mentored “move on” from needing you as a mentor. A huge part of maturing in our personal and professional lives lies in learning how to let go of the ego. If the person you have been mentoring no longer needs your help, that is actually a good thing. It means that you have successfully taught them what you know, and they now feel capable enough to continue their journey.

If this moment of transition pains you, maybe it’s time to start asking yourself why you got into the business of mentorship in the first place. Are you doing it because you truly love it and want to see others succeed? Or were you looking to gain something from it yourself?

The key to navigating situations like this is upfront communication. Before establishing a mentor/mentee relationship, ask what they’re looking for, and evaluate your own intentions for wanting to partake in the relationship. Set expectations, and be honest upfront, the goal is for everyone to grow and move forward.

The second question comes from Karl, a music video producer who wants to scale his business and start booking bigger clients. His question: what is the best way to break through?

While we should never compare ourselves to others, we should definitely compare our work to others’. What is the level of quality that’s required to get to that next step? Take a look at other people who are booking the gigs that you want, what does their work look like? What does your work look like compared to theirs? Who are the major people whose radar you need to be on to get to that step? If you can answer those questions, that’s a great place to start.

Be intentional about your approach and honest about the quality of work you create.

To the right of the logo, the image depicts a dark, moody scene inside a room at night. A wooden table is at the center, on which a laptop is placed. The laptop is on fire, with flames engulfing the screen and keyboard, casting a warm glow on the surrounding area. The room has large windows with potted plants on the windowsill, and there is a radiator beneath the window.
