Eyeist.com Helps You Build a Kickass Portfolio

In case you missed our December 6th, 2011 episode of chasejarvisLIVE, it was all about the portfolio. We had Allegra Wilde, visual strategist and co-founder of eyeist.com on the show, talking about common mis-steps and some of the best ways for your work to get noticed. She even gave us a quick portfolio review and a sneak peek at her upcoming service eyeist.com. Yesterday Allegra and her partners launched their product for the world. Check it out here. It’s a service that will truly help photographers worldwide.

The company has assembled a team of over 50 reviewers, who are among the most respected photo experts and authorities in the field including Photo Editors, Publishers, Photographers, Advertising Agency Art Buyers, Photo Agents, Gallerists, Museum Curators and more.Registration and image uploading is free at Eyeist, and photographers can purchase their review from an a la carte menu of services including selecting a Basic Review and receiving a recorded oral critique, a Website Review, a Live Review in real-time using Eyeistʼs innovative interactive workspace, or a Photo Editing andSequencing review of their photography project. Base prices range from $100.00 to $350.00 and photographers can request a specific Eyeist Reviewer or ask to be automatically matched with a reviewer according to their needs. All of the reviews at Eyeist are completely private, but as an added public feature, there is a section of the site in which Reviewers can highlight work that has been submitted by photographers during the review process. These projects will be showcased in a specially curated “Reviewers Choice Gallery” which provides an open acknowledgement for the photographer in the eyes of the Eyeist Review Team. Allegra comments:

“Weʼve seen plenty of public forums that comment on photography, but this is the first time that experts have been given their own platform to contribute their opinion on what theyʼre seeing—and liking—all in one place.”

I’ve always considered paid reviews the only viable way to get feedback (besides the “feedback” in the form of jobs/no jobs). Therefore I must have been one of the first to use Eyeist when it went live. Ever since I heard about it here I had been waiting for it.

Carolyn Potts ended up being my reviewer. Summing it up, to me it was the best investment I’ve made recently. While I consider most workshops a modern form of robbery, her review had a lot of value to me. On one level, what she said made a lot of sense. On another level it was very interesting to see how someone uninvolved looks at a body of work. I recommended it to a few friends who signed up and booked reviews as well, they were all quite happy with it.

Two minor things: 1) Please, please, get the gd player to work without such hassle. I had to go through like five browsers on two computers before it actually worked. Even better, make it work on an ipad. 2) Don’t send emails asking for positive feedback. It looks really desperate when a paid service asks for free advertisement. If someone likes the service they will spread the word because well, they like it (like I do). If you feel like those emails are necessary, at least add some incentive like a voucher or something. Everyone I know found that a little weird.

Certainly not the last review I booked there, highly recommended!
    Greetings from Vienna/Austria,
    Ronnie

      Hi Ronnie,

I hear you on the email… We got really excited when Andy Adams @flakphoto put out the query on twitter about whether anyone had ever used Eyeist, so we reached out to our early adopter clients to post their feedback. We do need your honest assessment, as you’ve given us in your post (and what we we’re asking for in our email – not only positive responses btw – just… responses), especially now, as we have created something that hasn’t been tried before.

Regarding the “gd” player, I asked our developer, Doug Dawir, to respond :

“The audio playback function in Eyeist has been recently updated and now works on iOS devices along with the current versions of Chrome, Safari, and IE. Firefox remains persona non grata until they support the de facto H.264-based HTML5 audio playback standard. (Something they have already started doing on their mobile version.)

      Hope that helps….

Thank you for choosing Eyeist, the kind words, and for the constructive feedback. It’s invaluable to us… A.

I’d love to use this but there seem to be very few if any reviewers active in the fashion industry, it seems more geared towards commercial photographers.
