Dan Martell: Are you Chasing Financial Freedom or Happiness?

Dan Martell is an award-winning Canadian entrepreneur, investor, best-selling author, and coach. He’s coached more than 1000+ SaaS founders, including clients whose names we’d easily recognize as industry leaders, like ClickFunnels, Proposify, and Carrot. Dan had founded, scaled, and exited three tech companies successfully and is the founder of one of the largest coaching businesses in the world, SaaS Academy. He’s committed to helping others buy back their time and his new book Buy Back Your Time does just that.

Dan says it best when he says, “I’m known as the software guy.” He runs the largest software coaching company in the world called SaaS Academy. SaaS in case you’re wondering means software as a service. At SaaS Academy, they help companies build repeatable and scalable growth. Dan’s entire purpose for this kind of work is to help people create more of what they love.

As if helping 1000s of coaches isn’t enough, Dan is now reaching the masses with his new book  Buy Back Your Time: Get Unstuck, Reclaim Your Freedom, and Build Your Empire.

He’s asking and answering the question on many entrepreneurs’ minds, “How different would life be if we only worked on the things we loved.” Dan’s got a formula for that called The Buyback Formula, and today we’re going to dive right into that, he explains it all.

Where Fulfillment Isn’t

I’ve got to get right to the point, if we’re creative entrepreneurs aiming to be the best in the world at anything (whatever that is), there’s no balance. When that’s a conscious decision that’s fine but when we achieve great heights unconsciously following the opinions of others that’s when it’s risky.

Dan explains he learned this the hard way. “Most people listening to this episode are going to be successful.” He says,“It’s just that when you get to the top of the ladder, is it leaning against the right wall?”

Dan created success at a young age, and then went to Silicon Valley to create more—even if he didn’t know what that was when he first got there.  Like a lot of us, he did the thing, and received the accolades but realized it wasn’t what he wanted to be doing.

The Fastest Way to Change Things

There’s a fast way to change things, and that is to change how you see yourself.

The fastest way to change your self-identity is to change your environment. When Dan decided the direction he wanted to go, he immediately shifted to put himself in the right environment with the right people.

The more we help other people be successful, the more successful we’ll be. If we want to develop our identity we can change our environment and peer group and be genuinely helpful to create authentic and lasting impact in the lives of others but also towards our own goals.

The Buyback Formula

This is something you’ve probably heard me say before. When we get confused we need people, places, and resources to help us.

When it comes to creating the business success so many of us have dreamed of, Dan’s book Buy Back Your Time: Get Unstuck, Reclaim Your Freedom, and Build Your Empire. Does just this. It’s about how to scale your business, create a life of freedom and build your empire by buying back your time – and he’s got the formula for that.

Being successful isn’t about finding more time to do more things. That’s not success. Success is about living a creative and fulfilled life that is vibrant and full of energy. This can be achieved by installing systems and mindsets that support us to engage in high-value work and home life.

Big Picture Thinking

When you’re doing big things, creating balance can feel unattainable. It’s not that it’s out of reach, but it’s a choice. Dan and I talk about the final chapter in his book. It’s called The Buyback Lifestyle.

Everything he’s applied and had success with when it comes to business and creating a life of unlimited creation that he doesn’t have to retire from involves these lessons. When the same concepts are applied to relationships, personal goals, family, and so many of the things that make life so great, we live a life of complete joy and freedom.

I’ve noticed my excitement about work myself when I go through the day working on the aspects of my what I do that light me up. There’s a lot of other stuff we have to do in business, Dan is showing us how we can approach that work, buy back our time, and ultimately make the best of every day—work or play.

Enjoy!
