I still deconstruct the work of other photographers all the time – it’s a great way to expand skill sets and understanding. And I know from your previous feedback that you guys are fond of these posts, so let’s dig into another one.
I was asked to photograph the amazing and controversial Prince Manvendra of India last month in NYC. It was an honor. But tell me…
How did I make this picture?
Is it a snapshot?
Lighting?
If so, how?
The camera Settings?
The direction?
Post production?
Whatever details you think were needed to make this image.
We’ve done this lots before, but I thought this particular image would be a good one to dig into for a couple reasons. I’ll reveal how it was made in a followup post and give a signed book or something to one person who nails it in the comments below.

Not a snapshot. One light camera left on subject, flagged a bit, rembrandt lighting. One light behind the chair, lighting the amps. And are those candles lit? 🙂 f11. Looks like you shot just a little lower than the subject’s gaze, but strait on. Not much post. Maybe a few global adjustments like blacks and contrast.
Main Light 30 degree gridded Beauty Dish, high camera left. 10 degree grid reflector behind chair aimed at background. Shot at f8 at 125th at around 50mm .
If you wrote the answers to the test on the board will i really learn anything? Leave it wide open
agree…
SHOT WITH INSTAGRAM.
Is it a snapshot? This is not a snapshot
Lighting? 2 gridded strobes.
If so, how? One to camera left, and a gridded lighted behind chair facing speakers.
The camera Settings? Camera settings were f8, ISO 100-200, s/s 160-200
The direction? straight ahead
Post production? tweaked the blacks up, and adjusted fill light up, and increased vignetting
Whatever details you think were needed to make this image? Definitely some gobos being used as well as bounce to subject’s left.
WHAT DID I WIN? Do I get to pick which color Bentley I want? No car???? Thanks for that new Hasselblad friend. I’ll pick it up !!!!
