Drop The Digital From Photography

I heard it again yesterday for the billionth time: "Digital Photography". Isn't it time we drop the word 'digital'? Seems we've managed to drop the "electric" from "electric guitar" in common parlance. We found it easy to drop the word "acrylic" from "acrylic painting" when that came on the scene with oils. We quickly ditched the "digital" from "digital music" when it took the lead over records and tapes and CDs. I suppose by-and-large our... read more ›

Chase Jarvis Keynote Address on ‘Social Art’ from Photo Plus Expo NYC

In the past several days, I've received a ton of correspondence asking if I'd re-post my chasejarvisLIVE Keynote address from the PDN Photo Plus Expo in NYC last week. You asked for it, you got it. At about the 25-or-so minute mark, I wrap up my monologue and invite a handful of guests on stage, all of whom I consider my friends who are living my message. I think you'll be quite engaged.... read more ›

Make A Lot of It

I'm certainly not a chef, but whenever I'm asked what the "key ingredient" is to making good photographs, good ART, the answer I give is a simple one: make a lot of it. We often talk about how vision is everything, but vision doesn't come from the womb full grown and mature. It's cultivated. And that cultivation takes time and effort. Certainty and control might be your friends while performing surgery, but they are not... read more ›

If you've been following along here for the past few weeks, you've seen me writing and vlogging about it. Well, now it's finally here. And like many... read more ›

Proof of a Portfolio Vs. Promise of a Resume

People that have "done it" will be able to do it again. Whether it's shooting a successful commercial assignment, hanging in a museum, making a music video, or whatever. It may not be a de-facto truth, but that's what's believed on the open market. It's SAFER for the person hiring a creative if they can point to something that you've already done. One reason I get a lot of work is that I've done a... read more ›
