This work is probably the best argument for straight photography that I’ve ever seen on the net. The very first thing that everybody wonders when they see the pics is the same …”is it real?”
In the film era, there was an aura that surrounded the process of producing a photograph. People were genuinely amazed by the mechanical process of exposing and developing a piece of film to make an image. But photography is so easy and accessible in the digital era that there is no longer an aura associated with the process. Now, the aura has shifted from the process and on to the subject. People want to know “is it real?” They want to know that the subject is something real…and if it is real…then the photograph has an aura.

Yes, I remember seeing the images of the “Midway” project, very moving. Looking forward to the session on CJL. Difficult not to feel despair, impossible to imagine how much plastic is actually floating out there.
It is trauma that makes people change if they are willing to face it. Otherwise what we see, experience is not a reality. I think people need to have a strong emotional reaction, beyond “oh that’s terrible”and they just move on in their life. The don’t stop to consider what they do and what others do, impact far more than just their own life.

I came across Chris’s work a couple of years ago. Recently saw his Midway project and became VERY inspired. Will definitely be tuning in for this episode. Big thanks!
