"The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves." -Carl JungI read this quote right about the same time I stumbled on Aaron Gustafson's work. Aaron, a recent MFA graduate from Parson's, it seems has a love for skydiving. Aaron is creatively compelled to shoot with a 4x5. Aaron is letting his mind play with... read more ›

First real day back in the saddle after the holidays? Steal a few minutes and watch this vid. It's not a requirement to love photography as much as the next person, but I love seeing people who love it as much me, my friends, and these guys do. It'll probably remind you why you love photography too. Viva Hamburger Eyes.(via lensculture)

Major props to the overall winners of the prestigious Prix De La Photographie Paris prize: Erwin Olaf for staking claim to the Photographer of the Year title, and also to Annett Reimer for owning up to Best New Talent. I highly encourage popping over to the Px# site for a through the honorable mentions if you have a chance. Plenty to oogle. And I'll try not break my arm from patting myself on the back... read more ›

Two French students were awarded the annual Grand Prix du Photoreportage Etudiant last week to honor a photographic story that presented images documenting the precarious lives of students today and the things they must do in order to survive and succeed. The only catch is that the entire story was a fake. And during the award ceremony, the two "winners"--Guillaume Chauvin and Remi Huberr, art students at the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Strasbourg--instead of claiming... read more ›

One of my favorites, the legendary street artist, Banksy, has "secretly" taken over the city museum in his hometown of Bristol. In a rare statement, Bansky said: "The people in Bristol have always been very good to me - I decided the best way to show my appreciation was by putting a bunch of old toilets and some live chicken nuggets in their museum...This is the first show I’ve ever done where taxpayers’ money... read more ›

If you’ve tuned into my Facebook or Twitter recently, you’ll know I’m finally back in the saddle, stateside, after a couple of fun and productive weeks in Dubai, UAE. I made my way to the Middle East’s skyscraper mecca for a number of reasons, one of which--I’m proud and excited to share--was my first official fine-art gallery show. Having been uber-busy heading into the planning of this thingie, I went into it with low expectations--maybe... read more ›

The images surrounding the first African American US President, Barack Obama, will indisputably be an important part of the historical record of our country, and, likely, the world. I believe it’s this new era of photography--both in the creation of images and how they are spread--that has brought us a more interesting, diverse, and never-before-experienced range of images and access to them. And setting campaign platforms aside, it's a worthwhile endeavor to examine the images... read more ›

I just recently updated my online portfolio with some more images that strike the chord I've been pursuing lately: curious moments coupled with simple, inky finishes that kick contrast and density rules to the curb.Reminds me: I gained some insights, some laughs and some horror out of reading the comments from a post not too long ago where I encouraged you to Be My Editor, as well as the followup post The Results Are In.... read more ›

For the first time, I’m publishing a book of photographs to share directly with the public, and it is available right now. Titled simply Stevens Pass, this limited-edition coffee table book (only 2500 copies) is a collection of images from Stevens Pass , an homage to one of Washington’s favorite ski destinations and a celebration of the resort’s 70 seasons of operation. I learned to ski at Stevens Pass 30 years ago and have been... read more ›

I was surprised to recently learn that, just like Hollywood celebs have their kooky mathematical rankings on "box office power" or whatever, visual artists are also apparently not immune to a ranking system. Over at Artfacts.Net, they seem to have a reasonably sophisticated algorithm that ranks heavy hitting visual artists. Andy Warhol is #1. There are two photographers in the top 20. Can you guess them?
