Yesterday's scout was epic. After waking at 3:55am Seattle time, flying Seattle >> Denver >> Aspen we arrived and hiked our asses up to 12,395 feet of elevation. Sea level to 12 grand in a few hours. Good for the heart and mind - hard on the lungs. Our scout + the weather report (scheduled for perfect sunshine) yielded information... read more ›

Ever clicked the sepia button on Aperture, Lightroom, or your favorite photo app and wondered, "What the hell is sepia?" I bet you have. It's fascinating how many novice and seasoned photographers alike don't know exactly what Sepia is. So I figured I'd give you all a little bit of cocktail party ammunition to impress... read more ›

Street artist Mark Jenkins challenges people with his unique sculptures of humans in interesting or compromising situations. Made from packing tape and then dressed in pants and shirts, wigs and jewelry, these "dummy" arrest the passerbys with surprise and delight. Click through the gallery above to see some prime examples of Mark Jenkins' work. Photos of the pedestrians passing seem completely disinterested in the oddities that they are strolling right past. Twin beds and sleeping... read more ›

The Vietnam War is often credited as the first conflict that was actually brought into the homes of American civilians. Graphic television reports, blooding images on black-and-white televisions...a lot has changed about the way we cover the war. But this series in The Atlantic captured my attention and pointed it to the first American war where photographic images were even captured. Made me realize how, even... read more ›

Want to know what your rights are as a photographer in the USA for shoot photos in public? All of us USA'ers do, as well as anyone who might travel here. So...As a part of his hitRECORD project, kudos go out to actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (my best friend panel pal - here we are talking creativity...) for calling on the ghost of Ben Franklin to educate us via this cheesy--but very informative--cartoon by... read more ›

Hey photo friends, Erik here. I recently stumbled upon Photography Monthly’s article on “The 50 Greatest Cameras of All Time”. I was a little surprised that my beloved Olympus E-P3 didn’t make their list, but I put together this little collection of some of my other favorites with some bits of information about them for your perusal. And whoa are there some doozies in there. The list is fascinating, lots of history and indications of... read more ›

Fashionistas (and fashion photographers) love to play with gender boundaries. Too often IMHO that turns campy, like poorly-executed drag, or tasteless-pushing-offensive. These don't. Here's a Monday morning kick for you - Craig McDean’s images of actress Chloe Sevigny, in character as a pre-op transgender assassin in an upcoming British show). And this, my friends, definitely avoids that... read more ›

In Seattle, we're enjoying some pretty balmy weather (for February). But I'm headed to Europe this week and I'm well aware that hundreds of thousands of people are suffering through a bone-chilling freeze--with temperatures dropping waaaay below normal. Amid mountains of snow and icicles as long as my arm, people are panicking and trying to help each other. And some people are photographing. I've shot in temps so... read more ›
