Two Paths for a Photograph: Arresting Vs. Welcoming. [Discussion on A vs. B]

Whoa. Again, love how opinionated we all are. Over 1000 opinions in 18 hours. Love love it. If you happened to miss yesterday's post, we asked for your help in choosing between two images during an edit. And, just as in previous A vs. B posts, I promised to follow up with MY preference of images and a discussion about the comparison. So here are my thoughts....(hit 'continue reading') Continue reading

Which Photo is Better: A or B?

Alrighty. Regardless of the fact that this A or B series (here, here, and here) has been really interesting for us, helpful, and popular with you (the last such post received over 1000 comments in 24 hours)... This time it is of even greater interest for us. You see, we're doing some image editing around here and we've stumbled into a little internal debate about which one of these two images is actually better, A... read more ›

Care, Time, & Vision Beat “Budget” Every Time.

I've been enamored with projection (onto art, buildings, cars, what have you...) for some time. But few people have made flat surfaces come to life like Davy & Kristin McGuire. I think this is simple, stunning and beautiful. And if you think creativity requires a lot of gear, think again. The visuals above were created simply using paper cut outs, a 5d Mark ii, a projector, an old Macbook with After Effects, some builders lights... read more ›

Recent Work: REI Snowboard Commercials

Hey yall. Wanted to share some recent work I did for the awesome outdoor company, REI. Above and below are two videos in a series of 5 that I created for their online holiday campaign. Commercials ran in lots of places... Both vids in this post were shot in the lovely town of Telluride, Colorado last spring. And Both feature a friend of mine, Marni Yamada. She's a dual sport (snowboard and ski)... read more ›

Photo of the Week. Like or Not?

Here's the Friday Photo of the Week. Was feeling wintery and I couldn't help myself. Tell us if you like and why/why not. Behind the scenes "making of" this shot and the camera/lens/spec details after the jump...Continue reading

Audio is the New Video.

Ok: so this video by W+K for Nike is certainly cool. For one, it's soccer. For two, it's Andres Iniesta from FC Barcelona. For three, it was shot with a 6-video-camera 360-spherical rig, introduced by director Scott Lyon. But the thing that impressed me the most is actually the sound. Put some headphones on if you can... They nailed the audio. I've learned that was recorded bi-aurally... a system I'm told where Continue... read more ›

The Dark Side of the Lens

I never set out to become anything in particular, only to live creatively and push the scope of my experience through adventure and through passion. You may have seen this before as it's been out for a while. I, for one, until yesterday had not. I found the monologue running behind the visuals simply beautiful. If you're a photographer or a filmmaker or a surfer or just want to lead a creative life, whether for... read more ›

Avoid Being Hassled By The Cops While Shooting Pictures

Shortly after 9/11 I was working with a small crew shooting an advertisement for Microsoft Mobile on a street corner in downtown Seattle directly across from the Federal Building. Within minutes of breaking out a couple large reflectors and clicking away a few frames, two armed officers came over and shut down our operation saying "you can't photograph federal buildings". I assured them the building was not the subject of the image. Nonetheless they shut... read more ›

Win A MacBook For a Snapshot: The Best Camera Challenge

Hi friends. I’ve ranted for years how mobile phone photography changed my outlook on a bunch of things...creativity born from constraints, the immediacy of the moment, digital sharing, the democratization of creativity, and on and on. As you may know, the ideals and the principle that ‘the best camera is the one that’s with you’ certainly captured my attention, led to my app, a book, a community, etc But here’s a question: have YOU actually... read more ›

Photo of the Day. Like it Or Not…?

Here's the Photo of the Day. Like it or not? I'd love to know, and it would be good for everyone if you told me why. [BTW, this image is from our "OGI" file. What's that? Well...Continue reading
