About Chase

Chase Jarvis is well known as a visionary photographer, director, and social artist. He is widely recognized for re-imagining, examining, and redefining the intersection of art and popular culture through still and moving pictures. While commercial work for brands like Nike, Pepsi, Volvo, Reebok, Apple, and Red Bull have earned him recognition from the International Photography Awards, The Advertising Photographers of America, Prix de la Photographie Paris, and numerous other industry buzz centers, his recent push into personal work and fine art has rapidly gained the attention of curators and art critics, mainstream audiences, and celebrity circles worldwide. Cornicopea of Speedlinks

-I love that Mikhail Gorbachev will soon be a poster-boy for Louis Vuitton. StateoftheArt tells us the campaign is coming in September. Smart advertising I think (funny smart, not Einstein smart). What does this say about our appetite for celebrity? -Please sign this digital petition to make it easier/possible to continue to photograph and film in NYC. Mayor Bloomberg's Office of Film, Theater, and Broadcasting is set to begin requiring a $1 million insurance policy... read more ›

Strobist Lighting Seminar in Seattle

I typically don’t do public service announcements on this blog, but occasionally I feel compelled to do ping you about something news-y when it's relevant. The last one I posted was to remind you to change your clocks over for daylight saving time (I’m the guy who can blow that sort of thing...) This next PSA is about one hundred times more important than showing up for work on time the day after changing your... read more ›

Chase Jarvis RAW: New Zealand Spring

Crazy camera angles, helicopter logistics, truckloads of gear, 15,000 miles and a crew of more than 30 people... As the saying goes, it takes a village. Hopefully you’re familiar with my ongoing video series entitled Chase Jarvis RAW, where I attempt to highlight the underbelly of commercial photography and how much effort goes into creating the images you see in advertisements, magazines, brochures and online. In this latest video, Chase Jarvis RAW: New Zealand Spring,... read more ›

Design, Law, Technology, Vodka, and Art – Something For Everyone

The title of this post should really read: "Design, Law, Technology, Vodka, and Art - Something For Everyone [To Help Me Dig Out From The Past Two Weeks]", but I figured the whole "Dig Out..." part was a bit too much. The gist of the title I spared you, as you might imagine, is that the last couple weeks have been crazy. It's why I've just had the longest run (15 days, gasp!) in the... read more ›

The iPhone Report Card – A Resource

I overheard someone at the LAX airport yesterday saying how cliche it was to blog about the iPhone. Blasphemy! That struck me as really obtuse, since one of the things blogs do best is address popular culture events quickly, relevantly, and with an unfiltered punch. So in your face, airport guy. I say it's not cliche to blog about it, it's probably more of a faux pas (keeping with the French...) for me NOT to,... read more ›

Jarvis v. K2

My recent, official statement released to no media outlets, but only to the ASMP reads:"I am gratified by last week's ruling from the 9th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals. It is a welcome victory for the photographic community and creative artists everywhere. This sends a clear message about the importance of artists' rights and the value of our work. While the proceedings -- begun only as my last resort to gain compliance from K2 after... read more ›

RSS Feeds – What They Are and Why You Like Them

It's been said, “There are two types of Internet users. Those who use RSS feeds, and those who don't.”The topic of RSS feeds came up at the Blogging Panel I participated in last week and the question didn't get enough time on the docket. So, for any new friends tuning in from that venue, or for anyone else who's a little timid and unsure how to approach RSS, check out this fun, and casual three... read more ›

ASMP Seattle Blogging Panel – Thursday, June 14th

Just a quick post from the road... (Exotic location? Not. See if you can find Roslyn, WA on a map... although it is the location where Twin Peaks was shot - see my earlier post on why/how David Lynch is a genius.) Anyhow, I'll be speaking on a panel hosted by the Seattle Chapter of ASMP this coming Thursday, June 14th at 6:00pm on--ironically--the topic of blogging. If you happen to be in Seattle and... read more ›

Shocking Design Spectrum

I like popular culture a lot. I'm a junkie with respect to it... I also like design, technology, branding, and athletics among lots of other things. And it's a collision of several of things interests that brought me to want to post this quick entry. I was shocked this morning--when perusing my daily must-hits online--and I stumbled on the following two things back to back. First thing, I'd not seen before. Second item, I've seen... read more ›

Hacking Your Camera’s Flash Sync Speed

Ever wanted to shoot with a strobe at a faster shutter speed that your camera's flash sync allows for? (Only like EVERY darn day, probably...since a 1/250 is sooo wimpy...). Well, I've been using this cool technique for quite some time, but it never occurred to me to share it as a neat-o "hack" to beat the system. My pal over at Strobist however, who is much sharper than I at identifying cool tips like... read more ›
