And not just the “how’d you get started in photography” questions…. we’re talking the hard questions, landing clients, hiring staff, working with challenging clients, legal questions, gear questions, portfolio questions, whatever you can muster…
As such, we’re dedicating and entire 90 minute chasejarvisLIVE show to this topic this Wednesday. I’m a college junior and in my time trying to decide what I wanted to do or be when I grew up I always wanted to do something with photography or videography. With that being said I always thought of both of these as a hit or miss job opportunity.
How did you first get your foot in the door and start yourself off?
Up until now I’ve always just said to myself that I’ll pursue another major I have some interest in and put these on the back burner as a hobby. I would love to do something I truly love like this but I never felt that it would be a sure thing as a solid job.
I know the mantra is personal work, personal work, personal work, and building a solid portfolio to get commercial jobs (which is currently the phase my buddy Joe and I are at right now). But once you’ve got a solid body of work to show, aside from hiring an agent how do you get it in front of the right people? How do you know who to contact to get those opportunities? And most importantly, how’d to know how to price your first commerical job??

What advise would you give out to ameteur/ beginning photographers that like to shoot in cities, but are harassed by police officers asking them for a permit and are not allowed to shoot with gear such as tripods? And have you been in any situation like this before, if so, how have you dealed with it?

I am new to Video production and really appreciate your past insights. What is giving me the hardest time doing event videography is managing focus during subject movement.(i.e. dance floor) There are no second takes, no real blocking. Do I have to accept wide focal lengths and 3ft to infinity depth of field? How do I add creativity to these ‘fluid’ situations? (FWIW The glide cam is still producing shaky video in these mitts of mine)
I’ve noticed many pro photographers are not upgrading their dslrs as quickly anymore because newer models have become so expensive, and don’t offer as much of a difference in image quality as before.
Do you think Canon and Nikon are making a mistake with their high end cameras by adding more and more features when many of us would rather have a digital equivalent of a FM2 ?
