Deconstruct This Photo 5.0 – Tell Me How It Was Done

I still deconstruct the work of other photographers all the time – it’s a great way to expand skill sets and understanding. And I know from your previous feedback that you guys are fond of these posts, so let’s dig into another one.

I was asked to photograph the amazing and controversial Prince Manvendra of India last month in NYC. It was an honor. But tell me…

How did I make this picture?
Is it a snapshot?
Lighting?
If so, how?
The camera Settings?
The direction?
Post production?
Whatever details you think were needed to make this image.

We’ve done this lots before, but I thought this particular image would be a good one to dig into for a couple reasons. I’ll reveal how it was made in a followup post and give a signed book or something to one person who nails it in the comments below.

Shooting at 800 iso? Could it be a video light? It seems odd to me to set up strobes and rate @ 800 – would you not work at 100??

2 lights, 2 softboxes, pn etop right of subject the other low power with grid pointed at the speakers, camera using 24-70 @ f/9, 160 shutter, ISO 200, post processed using vignette on lightroom.

How did I make this picture? – With a camera for sure. Trigger top right. You know, missionary style.
Is it a snapshot? – Definitely not.
Lighting? One light only. Fairly spotlighty.
If so, how? Placed left of shot. Wide enough around that shadows of him wont hit the speakers. Up kinda high. Extension cord. Power set to ‘on’.
The camera Settings? Pfft EXIF info. You planted that Chase you cheeky bugga. Shot around f8 maybe. Not sure on length – a stab would be 50mm. Speed, no idea – let go 250. ISO 200 – who knows though with post prodding.
The direction? “Sit on the chair and look at me please your highness. Nah, hands on your lap is fine. What’s that? Someone turn down the tunes please. Who chose this location anyway?”
Post production? Bump the contrast up a bit. Desaturate the colours slightly. Ramp up the blacks a bit. White balance off his fluffy top bit, then tweaked it a bit. Photoshop out the guitarist from Metallica.
