Deconstruct This Photo 5.0 – Tell Me How It Was Done

I still deconstruct the work of other photographers all the time – it’s a great way to expand skill sets and understanding. And I know from your previous feedback that you guys are fond of these posts, so let’s dig into another one.

I was asked to photograph the amazing and controversial Prince Manvendra of India last month in NYC. It was an honor. But tell me…

How did I make this picture?
Is it a snapshot?
Lighting?
If so, how?
The camera Settings?
The direction?
Post production?
Whatever details you think were needed to make this image.

We’ve done this lots before, but I thought this particular image would be a good one to dig into for a couple reasons. I’ll reveal how it was made in a followup post and give a signed book or something to one person who nails it in the comments below.

One strobe with a grid on top left. Another strobe on grid from right on to the background. Minor contrast, sharpening adjustments in PP.

I am gonna take a guess here just to bet on something different.

This was done with continues light. Spot from the left side pointing in and down a bit.

    24mm – 1/100 – F8 – ISO800

    Hello!

The thing is… camera settings were around 1/100s, f/8, ISO 800. it was shot with a wide lens…somewhere around 24mm.
The lights… for the character the beaty dish with a grid was used, placed slightly higher than his face on the left of the subject from camera’s point of view –> you can see the reflection on the speakers on the left side (camera point of view again).
Second light was used to light the right side of the speakers. Grided reflector and coming form slightly right side (you can see the shadow that candles are dropping on the speakers).

While you shot this, you were close to the floor, definitely lower then he was sitting.

It’s not a snapshot and minumim post production was used.

Have fun and greetings from SLOVENIA! You should come here some time, you would love it!

its a 3 light set up.

2 HSF to light the speakers.
    – 1 on the right of the Prince
    – 2 behind the Prince
both of them have been edited and removed in photoshop.
Looking at the hard shadows and the direction to where its falling, the 3rd light is at a 45deg angle on the right of the Prince.
Probably on a beauty dish .

    Camera Settings:
    f6.3-7 , ISO -100, 1/250, Shot with a 24-70mm

The ambient light has completely been cut out.
Photoshop – Contrasts bumped up, vignetting done in post.
