Deconstruct This Photo 5.0 – Tell Me How It Was Done

I still deconstruct the work of other photographers all the time – it’s a great way to expand skill sets and understanding. And I know from your previous feedback that you guys are fond of these posts, so let’s dig into another one.

I was asked to photograph the amazing and controversial Prince Manvendra of India last month in NYC. It was an honor. But tell me…

How did I make this picture?
Is it a snapshot?
Lighting?
If so, how?
The camera Settings?
The direction?
Post production?
Whatever details you think were needed to make this image.

We’ve done this lots before, but I thought this particular image would be a good one to dig into for a couple reasons. I’ll reveal how it was made in a followup post and give a signed book or something to one person who nails it in the comments below.

One light source to the left, maybe an octa. Looks like a 50mm, 1/200 at f11 since the speakers appear somewhat sharp. I’d say you messed with curves to adjust the detail in the darker areas, increased the contrast and sharpened it in post.

If its a snapshot its very good one!

I think it was done in a studio. Set up – 3 lights, 2 on the background left and right, 1 on the main subject pointing down, possibly a beauty dish, but on balance probably a snoot. Usual studio settings of Manual, F11 and 125 or 180 at ISO100.

Sharpening – most likely, standard amount in Lightroom or PS.

    For me it can be:

    – a one light setup (hard light – look at the shadows of the shoes) form left about 45 degree – and a composed background (soft light or overlay)

    – or a two light setup one light as above and a small blitz behind the chair to lighten the backgrund

Hey, this is my first shot at deconstructing a picture. I think it seems really interesting and there is definitely a lot to learn. So here goes:

    This is not a snapshopt, it’s a proper photoshoot set-up 🙂
1 light source is used to light this up and it’s placed at a very low height on the left at a 45 degree angle. The catchlight in his eyes makes me think so. The light is used probably with a softbox.
The aperture would be f.8 and shutter speed 1/250. ISO 200
The flash was also fired from the front but i don’t know what kind of flash coz i can see the flash light on the 3rd speaker from the left in the 2nd row. Also curious about the water that has frozen on the left ( pls correct me if it’s something else 🙂 ),

    Cheers!
