We Are Lilliputians in a Bathtub

I've been shooting sports and action images with a tilt/shift lens for about 5 years. It's a fun look for certain applications. Not long after, my buddy Vincent got really excited about shooting the ol' t/s from the air. Another cool look. Now you've seen us both shooting video through dSLRs with them - mine on the Nikon D90 and his on the Canon 5D MKII. We've been having fun goofing off with these things.... read more ›

Visual Artist Rankings. Who is #1?

I was surprised to recently learn that, just like Hollywood celebs have their kooky mathematical rankings on "box office power" or whatever, visual artists are also apparently not immune to a ranking system. Over at Artfacts.Net, they seem to have a reasonably sophisticated algorithm that ranks heavy hitting visual artists. Andy Warhol is #1. There are two photographers in the top 20. Can you guess them? Click the 'continue reading' link below to find out... read more ›

More Orphan Works

The Senate has just passed a version of the Orphan Works bill (officially the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act, S 2913) that is bad for our profession. We need to make sure that it does not pass the House and, therefore, we need your help. If you have not yet done so, visit the ASMP's Orphan Works page. You can generate a contact to your representative in less than 1 minute. For additional perspective, I wanted... read more ›

Need Your Help – Cadillac Wanted ASAP

I don't do this too often, but I'm in need of some favors. I'm reaching out to see if you or anyone you know has access to a 1974-1977 Cadillac Fleetwood, similar to the one pictured here. I need to rent/borrow it for a 2-day shoot next week in Seattle, so timeline is very short. Color is optional, but silver or dark preferred. Must be functioning. I will pay you and lavish you with praise,... read more ›

Be My Editor – The Results Are In

What's in a photographers portfolio is often there for intensely personal reasons. It could also be argued, on the other hand, that intensely personal reasons have no place in a professional photographer's portfolio. As a part of my search for personal clarity on this topic, and in an attempt to better understand my own demons and heroes with portfolio image selection, I recently asked for your feedback on my online portfolio. Anyone who was interested... read more ›

Move over Ninjas. Replace those swords, smoke machines and bikini-clad women with a new, fiercer battle featuring a Kung Fu master who uses his bare knuckles to fend off fire, earth, wind and water. This behind the scenes vid highlights my recent great fortune of collaborating with the design and live action wizards over at Superfad. I've written about their amazing work before... Thanks again guys for bringing me on board to shoot... read more ›

Photoshelter Closes Collection + Corbis Cuts Jobs

Today Photoshelter announced that, beginning October 10, 2008, they will no longer be licensing stock images. Major bummer for the industry. I'm currently in NYC, so I'll try to connect with Allen and Grover to pass along well wishes over a stiff drink... Accompanying that news, Corbis today announced that they've cut a bunch of jobs and trimmed spending. Ouch.In looking for a silver lining amidst today's news, Photoshelter will refocus their resources and continue... read more ›

Sarah Palin + Photoshop + Pop Culture = Interesting Questions

I know it's hard, but put your political beliefs entirely on hold for just a minute. I'm only asking you to do this because that's what it'll take for you to get the point of this post. Over at Jim Goldstein's blog, there's a brilliant dissection of this gun-toting, bikini-sporting Sarah Palin composited image that recently made it's way all over the world. The interview is not a dissection of what Sarah Palin is or... read more ›
