The Canon 5D MK III is here.

1 2 3 4 5 6

chase jarvis canon 5d mk iiiHey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.

Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction

The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.

The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.

Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

I’m a Canon user, and for me THIS camera is the game changer…I’m moving over to Nikon. I have waited for a major upgrade to my 5d mkII’s but there are only a few things that get me excited about the MK III.

I don’t think that will solve your problems…

Why did they put the locking mode dial on it!!! Have it on the 60D and absolutely hate it!! Otherwise the camera is a pretty big achievement I saw a few pics from the press conference release and it looks great in low light and the 6 fps is a pretty big update to the only 3 fps previously seen on the mark II.

Lots of objective (not) opinions here. Let me add my own subjective opinion to the mix then.
We’re going on specs and details the most of us, and a few sample images.
To my mind, it’s an excellent upgrade, with the fixes and improvements in the right areas. Who needs 36MP really?
The price is my only issue, and that’s only because in the US it’s going to be $3499 (which at today’s exchange rates equates with $AU3260). But Canon Australia intend to sell this camera at $4399!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s an $1100 premium for shipping the camera from Japan to Australia instead of the US… WTF!!!

I like the look of the camera, think it’s got pretty much everything I’d want from a DSLR, but the price.

When you compare it to the 5d2, the price seems steep for not a ton of upgrades, but when you see the 5d3 as basically a MINI 1DX…then I think the price is a steal! The only major thing it’s missing from the 1Dx is the 12 FPS, which I never shoot on continuous anyways, so that doesn’t even matter to me.

I am one of the weird ones that are actually totally happy about this camera release. I currently shoot with a Nikon D3s, and will be switching over for two of these bodies. I have always wanted a SMALLER body full frame camera that has the perfect MP count, great ISO, great video, and great auto focus. I waited for Nikon to release theirs and they thoroughly disappointed me with their 36 mp D800 (for me at least. I think it’s a stellar camera if you shoot only studio or landscapes…which I do neither). I would literally say my ONLY disappointment with the 5D3, is the the lack of 60fps at 1080p. To me, Canon dropped the ball there. That would have been a great way to actually say “We’ve stepped up our game with the video”. Just my two cents.

I absolutely agree with and share the same opinion. I’m currently using Nikon bodies and will be switching to 5D Mark III. The release of D800 has not excited my at all. Dealing with such large files requires a lot of computing power and patience. Canon has created a well-rounded camera and an update to the old AF system has been great.
