Hey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.
Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction
The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.
The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.
Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

OK I’ve read most of the posts so far and to boil it down and sum up
People like the:
MP count (no more MP wars)
AF performance increases
ISO improvements
and the FPS
Dislikes:
the dual CF, SD card slots (Why SD I don’t know a single pro that uses SD cards, so now they all have to go out and buy SD’s to use the slot…….”Click” ahhhh Now I know why!! I wonder how much Canon got paid to put that card slot in)
THE PRICE?!?!? Its about 1000 of whatever currency you are using too expensive
and thats about it
As someone who works in the photo industry I see which cameras a lot of people use and the 5D mkii was used 80% of the time (with Medium format taking 18% and various others including Nikon the other 2%)
Will they all upgrade? Yes eventually
Would they upgrade right now if the price was better? YES and more would join them too
The 5D mkiii will be my next camera (assuming nothing better comes out like a full frame 1DX etc)
I have been a Canon user since 2006. I have been shooting with the 5DII since it’s first day on the market. (I am now running on my fourth body of the 5DII). I love how they have addressed some weaknesses that the 5DII has and made them better in the 5DIII. I love the fact that they didn’t change the battery! There isn’t enough lithium in this world 😀 Will test out the AF once available since the AF of my 1DIV is less capable in low light then my 5DII. (central point of course)
I have one major issue with the 5DIII which will probably kill the purchase for me. The first thing I do on a brand new camera (5DII, 1DIV are my latest) is swap the focusing screen for the precision screen (S). That detail is important to me since I shoot weddings and events with a full bag of 1.2-1.4 glass.
Nothing like a bit of new camera tech to get the photo geeks foaming at the mouth. However the Canon, Nikon war is soooo tired and boring.
The new 5D looks a nice bit of kit. I’m in the market for a new camera as the 1DS is getting a little tired and could do with retirement to the back-up body. I was thinking of the 1DX but the 5D MKIII seems to pretty much hit the mark for what I need. I’ll certainly take a closer look at the 2 before making a purchase.
That I think is the point – buy a camera that suits you. No need to begin hating on a new bit of tech simply because it doesn’t fit your requirements.
Calm down people.
This is what i hate, this is a camera not a video recorder,They make your tool by many company’s called HD video recorder.
Best thing is it will reduce the price of the MkII… and the MkI 🙂
