Which Photo Is Better: A or B ?

chase jarvis photo brent amaker

Remember when I did the original chasejarvisLIVE photo shoot way back in winter? If you recall, I was shooting the album cover image for alt/punk country band Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. We also did post production and editing on the images LIVE as well a few weeks after the shoot. Well now it’s time to print these suckers on a limited edition run of vinyl and there is somewhat of a debate on which image is better.

Simply put, and with no further explanation, I thought I’d ask for your thoughts. So which is better, A or B?

Vote in the comments. Also love to know ‘why’ if you care to explain. 500 px wide images after the jump…

[ also, reminder that if you like music and you like chasejarvisLIVE, I’m hosting rising hip hip star RA Scion (of Common Market and Victor Shade) TODAY in 90 minutes at 10:30 pacific/1:30 eastern (GMT – 8). Interview with RA and Village Voice/Time Out/Stranger cultural critic Charles Mudede, plus RA performs LIVE at the end of the show. Hope to see you http://www.chasejarvis.com/live today….]

    What he said, definitely A.

A is a dynamic and engaging photograph. B is an incomplete image that might invoke a question about the foreground woman but that alone disqualifies it as a composed image, complete in itself.

Who the folks in the photograph are is insignificant. They could be an act waiting for their turn on stage or a group of relatives waiting to be called in to their grand-mother’s funeral. They are not individually engaged with the full set of the room but anyone who takes a moment to really look at it — see it! — quickly must determine it is a room filled with self indulgent folks amusing themselves while waiting for we know not what. But we do want to buy the album and find out!

I like B, the one where she is standing up.
I just think that it looks better than A. In A, I don’t like how she is sitting down, mostly because of the way her dress falls on her upper torso area. It just doesnt look good….

A is better, because it has more interesting composition and balance. It is also better processed: it looks like B could use a bit of exposure/vignette tweaking to look more like A.

It depends, however, on your target audience, and what this is for. A is more male-oriented, and risqué whereas B is more about the figure in the foreground, and everybody having a good time. There is more of a female/male balance there.

In conclusion, I prefer A because it is darker, more interesting, and a better execution of an image overall. However, for some uses, B is preferable. Thanks for this post, it’s interesting, and I’d love to see more live on the internet photo shoots.

    >>>B<<< one girl laying and one standing makes the picture more dynamic
