Remember when I did the original chasejarvisLIVE photo shoot way back in winter? If you recall, I was shooting the album cover image for alt/punk country band Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. We also did post production and editing on the images LIVE as well a few weeks after the shoot. Well now it’s time to print these suckers on a limited edition run of vinyl and there is somewhat of a debate on which image is better.
Simply put, and with no further explanation, I thought I’d ask for your thoughts. So which is better, A or B?
Vote in the comments. Also love to know ‘why’ if you care to explain. 500 px wide images after the jump…
[ also, reminder that if you like music and you like chasejarvisLIVE, I’m hosting rising hip hip star RA Scion (of Common Market and Victor Shade) TODAY in 90 minutes at 10:30 pacific/1:30 eastern (GMT – 8). Interview with RA and Village Voice/Time Out/Stranger cultural critic Charles Mudede, plus RA performs LIVE at the end of the show. Hope to see you http://www.chasejarvis.com/live today….]A. With the foreground lady laying down…

OR.
B. With the foreground lady standing up…
Love to hear your thoughts.

B.
Ok, I’m in the minority here, but for me it has to be A. I prefer the more subtle composition and I feel like there’s more of a sense of story– my mind really wants to question what role the women play in t he photo (and that’s a good thing) more than in B.
Also, visually, I love the light on the woman in the foreground, and while her wine glass remains full I don’t look at that as a mistake but rather it makes me wonder what it’s symbolizing. I also love the subtle pop of red from the chair on the right, and the way the positioning of the band members forms a triangle. It feels like more of a cinematic climax, if you will. Whereas with B, the set looks a bit too cluttered for my eye. I don’t like the way the guy who’s dead center in the frame (lead singer?) is disappearing into the dark objects behind him.
That said, there’s plenty to like about B. Chiefly, the cowboy lighting the cigarette. Love his posture in B.
Are you going to share your thoughts?
I like (B) most
(A) caught my attention first but after inspection I like (B) most
I would have to say I like B better as well. I agree with all the reasons above.
– B was the one that stood out on initial view
– I like the composition in B, it is tighter, and balanced. The lines on the wall seem straight and balanced giving the rest of the image a more balanced feel.
– Along with balance, the pairs of people work really well, AND
– Overall I think the story in B is better. You have these pairs of people, all separate, but together. All mysterious in their own way, and then the one foreground character seemingly coming from the man on the right… Is she standing there for attention from the onlooker (us) or is she fed up with what is going on with the other pairs and is thinking about leaving? There are more questions that pop into my head as I view B, and it keeps me looking. When I look at A, the story for me is… there are some people all drinking, one girl is getting ready to pass out on the couch and the other is already passed out and we have to move her now… It was a quick story, and didn’t hold me for very long. The story in B has held my attention for quite some time…
While I like the circular movement produced by A’s composition, I think the story is so much better in B… so I will have to stick with B as my choice.
Thanks,
Jake
Yep – agreed!
If you’re selling the band (A) if you’re selling the girl (B)
