A Barometer For Change In Photography And Video

The images surrounding the first African American US President, Barack Obama, will indisputably be an important part of the historical record of our country, and, likely, the world. I believe it’s this new era of photography--both in the creation of images and how they are spread--that has brought us a more interesting, diverse, and never-before-experienced range of images and access to them. And setting campaign platforms aside, it's a worthwhile endeavor to examine the images... read more ›

If you follow me on Twitter, you likly already saw this from my morning tweet, but I couldn't resist posting it here as well. It's just too unbelievable not to share. Will Work For FREE?

Many of you know David Hobby, aka Strobist. He and I are dear friends. We talk often. And we’ve been talking for several weeks now about free photography. Free? Huh? Whadaya mean FREE?! FREE? This is where some of you may freak out.Ya, I mean free. Not as in licensing photographs you’ve already taken, but as in taking pictures for someone's use, in exchange for zero money. A project, a test, an assignment. I’ve been... read more ›

Annie Leibovitz Interview, This Time In Seattle

Love her or don't, but she's been a formidable photographer for decades. And this week, Annie was in Seattle pushing her new book "Annie Leibovitz at Work". You may have caught her more polished interview on NPR earlier in the week, but local NPR host Steve Scher managed a longer and more gritty interview with her after her talk here Wednesday at Benaroya Hall. Almost without regard to the content, I'm usually more interested in... read more ›

Visual Artist Rankings. Who is #1?

I was surprised to recently learn that, just like Hollywood celebs have their kooky mathematical rankings on "box office power" or whatever, visual artists are also apparently not immune to a ranking system. Over at Artfacts.Net, they seem to have a reasonably sophisticated algorithm that ranks heavy hitting visual artists. Andy Warhol is #1. There are two photographers in the top 20. Can you guess them? Click the 'continue reading' link below to find out... read more ›

More Orphan Works

The Senate has just passed a version of the Orphan Works bill (officially the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act, S 2913) that is bad for our profession. We need to make sure that it does not pass the House and, therefore, we need your help. If you have not yet done so, visit the ASMP's Orphan Works page. You can generate a contact to your representative in less than 1 minute. For additional perspective, I wanted... read more ›

A New Project: Songs For Eating And Drinking

Okay, I'm really excited to share.Throw some big-time musicians around a table with some amazing up and comers, feed 'em like kings and queens, and what do you get? You get some stunning musical performances and a bunch of honest and richly textured video--like this one above--where Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam and Barb Ireland cover "Cool Water" by Hank Williams. You also get a whole bunch of beautifully intimate still images and a... read more ›
