Facebook Retracts “New” Terms of Service

Thanks to public outcry, Facebook today retracted their "new" terms of service--which generated an appropriately huge outcry--and reverted to their previous terms. This is of interest to me, seeing that I've got a good bit of content on my Facebook page.Their previous terms were pretty aggressive in their own right, claiming: "You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream,... read more ›

Chase Jarvis SHORTS: 08/09 Holiday Mailer Unboxed

In full disclosure, I’m probably not the best person to pay attention to for stellar direct mail promo pieces. We did score a PDN Self-Promo award back in 2006 with this piece, but outside of that, I haven’t historically had a cohesive plan about this sort of stuff. And so it continues here today. But that's not stopping me from wanting to share them. Actually, I’m proud to say that this is my... read more ›

Scott’s Guest Blog: Creative Post Production and Why I Have a Hard Time Caring About Stock Photography.

[Note: I'm excited today to announce a new element to this here blog: monthly guest posts from my badass staff. Since each of them are experts in their own right, I figured you'd be interested in hearing some different perspectives. Today, Scott takes the reins and raps about our push for visual impact over "perfection" and how stock photography gives him the willies. Round of applause, please...take it away Scotty...]We keep a lot of irons... read more ›

God Save the Queen

Just wanted to break up the pace today and share a couple of links that I recently plucked from my inbox. Where it used to be just still images and portfolios that were sent my way by readers, it's now often personal projects that engage a mixture of stills, moving images, and audio/music. And everyone knows I'm an advocate of personal projects... Without my intending, it seems that each of the three I posted below... read more ›

This is Not a Nikon D3x Review. It’s Just Me and Scott Talking.

[Update: the video hummed along nicely for about 24 hours, however sometime late Saturday/early Sunday the embedded video stopped playing here, presumably due to Facebook bandwidth constraints/large traffic volumes. We reposted and it was just more of the same. They're still serving it to my Facebook page if you're interested in checking it out there.]Whew! Just wrapped the first ever (I'm told) national ad campaign shot with the Nikon D3x. What an absolute beaut of... read more ›

Chase Jarvis RAW: [not] Getting To Portland

You should know that the above video is not my typical video. Sure it’s a Chase Jarvis RAW - the series where I normally show a bunch of behind the scenes footage from a shoot - but this is different because, while this certainly is the backstage of “a shoot,” there are ultimately no models, no cameras, no lighting, no wardrobe or props anywhere to be found in this video. Huh? I understand that... read more ›

After Photography

People once said, "Digital sucks, I'm sticking with film." People once said, "I'll create a library of images (stock? almost forgot it existed...), retire young and live off my royalties." People once said, "The sky (cloud?) is falling." People (me) have said, "This is the most interesting time in history to be a photographer." It's a known fact that more photographs are being used, licensed, sold today than ever before in history. Some photographers are... read more ›

Updated Portfolio + New Project

I just recently updated my online portfolio with some more images that strike the chord I've been pursuing lately: curious moments coupled with simple, inky finishes that kick contrast and density rules to the curb.Reminds me: I gained some insights, some laughs and some horror out of reading the comments from a post not too long ago where I encouraged you to Be My Editor, as well as the followup post The Results Are In.... read more ›

Stevens Pass Book. Going…Going…

Never thought I'd be complaining about signing the last 500 in a series of 2500 limited-edition books, but here I'm eating crow. Cody pulled together the funny little timelapse above, highlighting yours truly signing my last and final palette of Stevens Pass books at the warehouse. Can you say hand cramps? Big thanks to those of you who already nabbed a copy of my limited edition, self-published coffee table book in time for the... read more ›
