Seattle Post-Intelligencer Story

Saturday, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper (aka the Seattle P.I.) filled the cover of it's Life and Arts section plus an inside page, with--low and behold--a lifestyle feature about yours truly. PI Journalist, Kristin Dizon, and photographer, Scott Ecklund, collaborated on the piece. Dizon -a talented writer- was waaaay thorough, focusing on the present, but also unearthing things I did way back (gasp!)in freakin' high school. Many parts are spot on, other parts over-simplified, and some... read more ›

Photographers Who Blog in AfterCapture Magazine

Not long ago I was contacted by a talented writer (and part time photographer) living in Buenos Aires named Ethan Salwen. This month in the photo trade mag AfterCapture Salwan examines the pros and cons of blogging and what it takes to make an interesting or successful web log. In this simple, unpretentious piece titled Enter the Blogosphere, Salwen interviews a small spectrum of photographers who blog and solicits and collates some smart advice for... read more ›

The Black Box of Advertising Photography Meets Business 101

This is not a rant. It's a page out of Business School 101.If you've ever seen/heard one of my speaking engagements, you've probably heard me talk about the Black Box. It's the name I've given to "what the world of advertising photography looks like to a new or aspiring photographer." Something goes it one end of the box (the request, the pitch, the job offer, etc) and something comes out the other end (finished images,... read more ›

Graffiti, Street-, and Public-Performance Art: Why It Matters

As as investment, I own a small commercial building not far from our studio in Seattle's historic Greenlake neighborhood. It's a quaint brick building from the 1920's with tons of character and charm and I've intentionally filled it with tenants with creative businesses: architects, 3-D designers, filmmakers, etc. You get the picture. It got vandalized today. Tagged. Basically spray paint for the sake of spray paint on bricks and metalwork. I admit, when my friend Marc... read more ›

Help Me Respond To Crazy Political Crap

So while I was on assignment last week, my Seattle office got a call from some passionate Republican. He left a message about a "business award" I'd won. My office staff, knowing that I vehemently oppose the current administration and thinking this was a joke by one of my clever friends (I have several with whom I engage in such behavior), played along. The caller backed up his message by sending our office a fax... read more ›

Personal New Year’s Resolution

*Disclaimer: If you're reading my blog just for popular culture, art, or photography commentary, stop here. Seriously. If you are, however, prone to sympathizing with the occasional human interest story, you may read this short entry below. Now then, in consideration of the above: I’m not one for New Year’s resolutions. It’s more my personality that you should just do the things you need to do and/or want to do NOW, without the need or want... read more ›

Obituary: Old School Dead at 50

While I'm respectful of the past, it's true, I often rip on the Old School of photography, art, and culture--just read previous posts. Not because it's bad, but simply because it's not now and it's less relevant now than ever before. I just gave an interview to American Photo Magazine editor Miki Johnson (check out the group blog she does with the other editors Jay Defoore and David Schonauer) and I suspect my comments will... read more ›

Don’t Worry – Follow Up Post

So I suppose in some ways this is bad blog etiquette to start a new thread about an earlier thread of mine below, but I've been getting a lot of email about this post and there's been further discussion on other blogs (like the Big Images Blog, or It's What I Do) and , so perhaps it's worthy of round two. I've noted that for some reason only a few people have logged comments on... read more ›

Thank you PDN Magazine and Nikon for the Award

Thanks to collaboration from a handful of people in our office (read Scott, Kate, Julian) and our really talented designer and friend Finn McKenty (you can see their goofy video profiles on our staff page), I just barely squeaked in there and was awarded Honorable Mention for the category "Best Ongoing Campaign - Established Talent" in the 22nd Annual PDN/Nikon Self Promo Awards. Thanks to the judges and the fine folks at PDN Magazine and... read more ›

Knights of Cydonia – Part II

So my good friend Ben Winters, VP at Uppercut Images sent me this response to my Aesthetics: Knights of Cydonia post at 2am after we missed connections at the DJ Krush show at Neumo's in Seattle. He wasn't down with using the 'comments' unfortunately, and wanted this off-list. I have subsequently negotiated his letting me post his sleepy 2am rant-but-on-point note here:Chase,As I sit awake now reading my email at 1 am after sleeping through... read more ›
