Whenever I give a talk or host a show, I’ve heard from this community time and again that one of the most valuable things is the Q&A wrap up. Straight up. You asking questions and me doing my best to answer them. And not just the “how’d you get started in photography” questions…. we’re talking the hard questions, landing clients, hiring staff, working with challenging clients, legal questions, gear questions, portfolio questions, whatever you can muster…
As such, we’re dedicating and entire 90 minute chasejarvisLIVE show to this topic this Wednesday. We will take some questions LIVE via the #cjlive or #AskChase hashtag on Twitter (follow @chasejarvis here) during the broadcast, however, so that we can be organized and get through as many questions as possible, please frame your questions below in the comments. Sb-600 or sb-700 or Metz to my d90?
Hi Chase,
Do you have any tips for a starting photographer on how to balance between the prices you can ask as an semi-pro photographer and pushing the common photographers salaries down? I mean I don’t want to compete with other pro photographers with low prices, but on the other hand I can’t ask the same price as a real pro.
Other thing is that I’d like to photograph as much as possible to get material for my portfolio, but usually the best and most interesting opportunities I have to photograph for free as the situations are chosen primarily by me. After that it’s complicated to ask money for a shoot when I just did a similar shoot the other day for free. This is often the case as people see the pictures I have taken before.

Other than college, what is the best training available for a person interested in photography? any great book or DVD recommendations?

I’ve asked this question to a number of people but never got a good answer. What pc of pro glass should I buy first: the Canon 24-70 f2.8 or the 70-200 2.8?
I photograph mainly (location) portraits and weddings and no, I can’t buy both. I HAVE to choose, following zack arias’s advice (no debt startup).

Although the 70-200 is a thing of beauty, you will find the 24-70 is much more versatile.
