Alright photo geeks. Indeed, Nikon just announced the much-anticipated D4. I’ve known about its imminent arrival for some time. So let’s get into it…

Here’s some highlighted specs:

_16.2 effective megapixel, full-frame sensor (16.6MP total)
_10fps shooting with AF and AE, 11fps with focus and exposure locked, 24fps 2.5MP grabs
_1080p30 HD video at up to 24Mbps with uncompressed video output
_91,000 pixel sensor for metering, white balance, flash exposure, face detection and active d-lighting
_ISO Range 100-12,800 (extendable from 50 – 204,800)
_MultiCAM 3500FX Autofocus sensor works in lower light and with smaller apertures
_Two sub-selector joystick/buttons for shooting orientation
_New EN-EL18 battery (21.6Wh capacity, CIPA-rated at 2600 shots)
_Twin card slots – one Compact Flash and one XQD

Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras, and NO I didn’t shoot the campaign. and I haven’t yet spent the appropriate time with the camera to tell you any gory details. I’m assuming I’ll be able to chat more soon.

So.. I (we) knew this was coming, but rather than me spouting off about having played with the system (I can’t), or telling you what your feelings about this system should be (I won’t), I’m turning the tables on you.

What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights?

[Reminder that Nikon plays close attention to this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Nikon about what your thinking.]

This is what I wrote this morning when I found out the news about the D4: http://blog.mymusea.com/post/15396393240

    Honestly, I’m not impressed.

Yet another rant along the lines of “It won’t make you a better photographer…ect”.
Heard it all before mate so take your whining somewhere else.

It’s a camera aimed at working PROFESSIONALS who may well benefit from the extra features. If it’s a tool for them then why not?
It’s not aimed at the likes of whining wannabes like yourself who are just bitter because you know you’ll NEVER be able to afford one.
You can’t even get this toy into your pram to throw it out!

I am also disappointed that they didn’t bring more off-center AF points or at least redistribute the points so that they cover a larger area of the frame.
Also it seems weird to me that the viewfinder coverage is only 97% in the crop modes, this makes tight compositions a pain.
Moreover, you get far less shots out of one battery charge compared to the D3s.
Hopefully, they will do better with the D5…

I think the D4 is a great addition to the Nikon family. Although I wish they would have played the MP game here and the FPS game a little harder as well, just to keep that spots/studio edge. 18 or 20MP and 14FPS would be the perfect mix of speed and studio availability. Rather than headlines of “Nikon gets close to _____ with the D4” it could be “Nikon kicks _____’s Ass in photo AND video!”

Either way it’s a wonderful camera. Would love to try one out at a few concerts!

Adam, I’m looking forward to trying this out at a concert. That’s what I did with my D700 and, once I used it, I kicked my D300 to the curb, even though I enjoyed using it. Can’t wait to purchase mine.

Hi Ellen- I kicked my D200, D90 now using D7K for these low light events. Can’t wait for the D800!

This new video capability kicks @$$. My DP friends are going to love it.

It may be 2 or 3 years old but the D3s is still top notch, improving on that can’t be easy, the only thing that has let Nikon down over the last few years is its video functionality, but thankfully they seem to have nailed it – the D4 looks like an absolute beast! Audio control and clean HDMI out is a massive step forwards – I just hope those video features make it into the D400.

I just sold my D4 and upgraded to the D4s, i was super nervous at first, but i kid you not this thing is awesome, i don’t know if Nikon will ever be able to top this one. It should cost way more.
