Hey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.
Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction
The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.
The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.
Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

As a wedding photographer, this is *exactly the camera I have been waiting for. Let’s hope it lives up to the specs!
It’s as much a full-frame 7d (with some features from the 1DX) from a design standpoint as it is an upgraded 5dmk2. The form factor, the layout – it’s essentially a bigger 7dmk2.
As primarily a wedding photog and portraitist I’m really excited for the faster and more accurate AF. This upgrade is clutch since the 5dmk2 used the same AF as the original 5d. Making it 8 years old. The difficulty focusing in low-light left me cursing Canon more often than not. Ridiculous for the amount of $ they were asking.
I’m truly happy to see that we’ve stopped chasing megapixels. Canon has finally chosen quality over quantity.
The video functionality is slightly better, but then again – this is primarily a still camera. I’m amazed at the people who bitch and moan about not having the best of both worlds. Since when has any product done multiple things incredibly well?
It’s an incremental upgrade, some things are better. Nothing (as far as I can tell) is worse. It will be worth the money for those that want a lot of the functionality and quality of the 1DX but don’t want to spend $7k to get it.
CHURCH!
I like this new version but the lack of Clean uncompressed HDMI output it`s Sad if canon upgrade the firmware to give filmmakers the clean uncompressed HDMI the camera will be perfect.
But for me the bigger problem is the fact of American`s can buy the camera body for $3500 (2,651.08€) and we European have to buy the camera for 3500€ ($4621.34) it`s unfair we have to pay $1121.34 more for the same camera.
P.S. Chase i follow some of your work, i`m a big fan
Your absolutely right on this Pitocas, also unfair is computers/laptops and the price of petro/gasoline. USA around $398 gallon in California, what is the price in your part of the world?
I think it’s a very good and reasonable upgrade to the Mk II. For me the new AF is one of the key features. But will I upgrade right away? No. Because I’m on a budget and still love my Mk II. I think with this upgrade Canon has made everybody happy: current Mk II owners won’t see their camera “degraded” too much and future Mk III owners will still appreciate the upgrades and love the hell out of this camera.
I’m actually happy Canon is not going into Megapixel craziness here and kept it pretty much the same but went for higher fps. What I still cannot understand: Dual CF and SD Memory Slot? Why, Canon, why did you do that? Makes no sense to me. Dual CF would be something else entirely – but I guess space constraints wouldn’t allow for that. And I actually do miss an Ethernet port after seeing it in the 1Dx.
tldr: Great update, but I’ll stick to my 5D Mk II for another year or so.
I was looking forward to 5D M3 for last 6 months! But for that price they would have to cover it in gold….. Sorry no. If I feel in the near future that I need DSLR with video capability I will buy used 5D mark2. Until then my 50D will be enough. Good luck Canon in competing with D800.
