The Canon 5D MK III is here.

1 2 3 4 5 6

chase jarvis canon 5d mk iiiHey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.

Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction

The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.

The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.

Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

I am very disappointed. Canon needs a dedicated studio camera with photography being the main focus. I have been shooting canon for only 7 years but with this release have decided that all of my future investments will go to a different format. Sure I will keep my old 5d and glass for scouting or just to walk around the city but I will not be buying anymore glass or bodies until something breakthrough comes out. I would much rather invest in a used back and some killer H or LS glass. Just my two cents

      1Dx?

I can’t wait to receive mine. It solves just about every gripe I’ve had with the 5DII (although, I don’t use video)

Thank GOD they didn’t play the MP-race. I’d far rather have low-light performance than high MP… larger pixels make me happier than more MP.

    ’nuff said.

I couldn’t agree more. I’m very much looking forward to receiving mine.

Completely agree! The majority of my images end up as 10 x 8″ prints and I never print above 16×12″… The 21MP I have at the moment is more than enough.

I really like the camera and the upgrades, but the price is a little steep, I just don’t think that it justifies a $1000 price hike, maby a few hundred but not that much, overall though I am very excited to see this camera in action!

Supposedly the ISO performance at 25,600 is comparable to the mark 2 at ISO 6400. This and the new autofocus features may make this a concert/event shooters dream camera! Although, i still shoot the original 5D full time and LOVE it.

Only if it can focus in low light better than every previous Canon.

This specs looks quite promising to me and in fact I hoped that the D800 will basically be a D4 without battery grip 😉 Well let’s see how D800 and MK III will compare in higher ISO range. I’m still not sure what to do with 36 MP at least for 99% of my customers. D4 is to expensive to be an option and I’m not sure if I’ll use the D800 just in “crop mode” most of the time. Maybe Nikon will move the D400 to FX.

    Cheers, Harry

      – Just put it at 20mpixel or 9mpixel. All 36 mpixels are used to create an even smoother JPEG and RAW file
      – The high iso is better on the D800. Don’t be fooled by grain and marketed values (Canon mentioning native 25600 instead of D800’s 6400). If you process the RAW right, the D800 gives a more pleasant high-iso image with much more details visible. It has a little more grain, but grain on 12800 is not a bad thing. No DXO mark on the 5D yet, but I’ll estimate 2600 points on the high iso of the Canon.
