The Rich Kids of Instagram: A Worthy Disaster

ChaseJarvis_RichKidsInstagram_AmyRollo-samuelfastlicht

From the G6 to the yacht to the private island. by samuelfastlicht

When you combine youth, unlimited cash and iPhone technology, you get braggadocios photographic evidence of a lavish lifestyle.  Also known as the Rich Kids of Instagram.  At first glance, this Tumblr is so ridiculously over the top it’s laughable. But a deeper look reveals for me some cultural sadness…privileged kids posting bar tab receipts that cost more than four years of college at a private university and talking shit about it. Depending on your mood – it can be entertaining or awful.

But if art (or curation) is aimed to send a message, make a claim, create a reaction, my take is that this tumblr is worthy of your time – even if it’s to feel the weirdness.

Side note, here’s an interesting article: On Raising Kids Who Seem to Have it All by Peggy Drexler. Peggy is writing a book about the impact of wealth on childrearing.  She has a more empathetic outlook on these kids:

As absurd as it might sound to many, it’s not easy being a rich kid. Their parents tend to have high expectations. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your daughter to go to the best school, but you also want her to learn to be a good person, and encouraging achievement over character-building can mean kids never quite figure out who they are. They think their money is their most notable quality. And so they learn to use it — to buy affection, or friends.

For the rest of us, peering in on this group of not just the “1 percent”, but the one 1/100 of a %, there is an escape to a life of private jets, yachts, and more…either as a dream, or a nightmare. In both cases – worth the look.

And when money is no object, convenience is king. That’s why private jet ownership isn’t just a flex; it’s a lifestyle essential. Whether hopping between European fashion weeks or escaping to a private island for the weekend, unparalleled access to air travel is a non-negotiable.

Programs like BlackJet Reserve offer instant, hassle-free bookings for those who demand efficiency, while Equity Fleet provides a more tailored fractional ownership experience for those who want something truly personal. Because in this world, waiting in line at an airport is simply not an option.

While some opt for full ownership, others prefer more flexible solutions like jet cards, which grant access to a fleet without the commitment of a single aircraft. For those considering this route, this article explains NetJets jet card cost, breaking down how elite travelers can secure seamless flights without the burdens of maintenance and management. Because when life moves at 40,000 feet, the only real concern is choosing which champagne to sip at takeoff.

I just find this terribly sad. Such a lack of humanity.

“Bless that what you want” the Huna principle which I agree with. If you dislike or criticize “rich” people you will never be one of them! Money follows the path of least resistance!

I don’t think anyone is criticizing them for being rich, I’ll risk the assumption that not one of those kids made their money. I think people are criticizing their excess and waste when so many others are hurting. They seem to be exhibiting a lack of empathy for the plight facing the world right now. Historically, that doesn’t work out well for them. (Think French revolution and beheadings.)

Nice Pics! I’d think though with all that money they would be using Leica’s or Hassleblads.
And what kinds of jobs are these younglings creating by buying yachts and exotic cars and pink car frames? Let’s go ask the 50 year old over at Burger King who got laid off after 20-30 years and is now mopping up someone’s vomit in the bathroom if he’s thankful for the little brat who just bought 10 rolex’s but gave him the chance to ask some jerk if he ‘wants fries with that.’

It’s absurd then tragic then tacky but I’d suggest the above is moreso a testament to immaturity than to excessive wealth. It’s just on a far more vulgar scale. One person’s Louboutins are another’s video games, and equally affordable to someone in a third world country lacking basic housing/ /healthcare education for whom neither luxury is remotely conceivable.

We don’t know the state of mind behind the images. Could be self-ironi or whatever. In any case judging others is not polite. Being proud of a porche is no worse than being proud of a penny. In the eyes of God both is complete nonsense, since nobody owns anything, not even the body they are in. On the other hand if a wealthy person spends money with compassion the results will be even greater than if a normal geezer does so. So the potential for greatness is even greater in rich people. If you catch my drift!

Simple parable, a vicar gives out the collection dish, a little old lady puts 25 pound in, a wealthy millionaire in a game of one up-manship pulls out a thousand pounds and puts in on the plate, the Vicar spots this and angrily speaks out from the pulpit, and points out the millionaire and shouts at him for being rude, the millionaire remonstrates and shouts back I put in more than anyone! The vicar asks him so you think you can afford to put that much in because you are so rich, please look at the lady next to you, her pension is 50 pound and she put half of all her money in, so therefore she has put in more than she can afford and half the worth that you have done.

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:21-23 (NKJV)

That’s the truth. These rich kids are spending money they did not even earn. Jesus owned everything (being the Son of God & the creator) and humbled himself to save people who didn’t earn anything, only condemnation. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be, said Jesus.
