Remember when I did the original chasejarvisLIVE photo shoot way back in winter? If you recall, I was shooting the album cover image for alt/punk country band Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. We also did post production and editing on the images LIVE as well a few weeks after the shoot. Well now it’s time to print these suckers on a limited edition run of vinyl and there is somewhat of a debate on which image is better.
Simply put, and with no further explanation, I thought I’d ask for your thoughts. So which is better, A or B?
Vote in the comments. Also love to know ‘why’ if you care to explain. 500 px wide images after the jump…
[ also, reminder that if you like music and you like chasejarvisLIVE, I’m hosting rising hip hip star RA Scion (of Common Market and Victor Shade) TODAY in 90 minutes at 10:30 pacific/1:30 eastern (GMT – 8). With the foreground lady laying down…

OR.
B. With the foreground lady standing up…
Love to hear your thoughts.

In A the people form an ellipse around the frame and I guess the submissive woman is caught in the crab’s pincer of men.
In B the empowered woman forms a cross cutting across the vaguely sine-wave of men sitting waiting.
I like them both.
If i had to choose I would say A.
I don’t like the separation the woman i creating. It isolate the guy on the right.
Also having the feet of the lady on the sofa makes her look strange.
Also i like the pose of drinking guy with glasses on A but it seems kind of detached from the image on B.
I do prefer the light on the 2 side people on B where you can actually see them (i am looking at it on a non calibrated bad screen so i may be wrong.)
B would definitely make the better album cover. The standing girl is the reason why. It makes it more interesting.
A would make a great back cover, however.
I would pick B. A feels a little campy to me, a little hard rock, a little Mad magazine and even a little aeon flux. If that is the feel of the band, then go for it.
The woman is in the foreground but dimly lit leading your eye into the photo where there are a lot more interesting dynamics going on than in A. It feels a bit more sophisticated (even if it isn’t!).
This isn’t an easy choice; I really like different aspects of both photos.
I really prefer photo A in terms of composition and use of space, but the background elements in photo B are a lot more interesting. The guy lighting up his cigarette in the background is a fantastic detail.
