Remember when I did the original chasejarvisLIVE photo shoot way back in winter? If you recall, I was shooting the album cover image for alt/punk country band Brent Amaker and the Rodeo. We also did post production and editing on the images LIVE as well a few weeks after the shoot. Well now it’s time to print these suckers on a limited edition run of vinyl and there is somewhat of a debate on which image is better.
Simply put, and with no further explanation, I thought I’d ask for your thoughts. So which is better, A or B?
Vote in the comments. Also love to know ‘why’ if you care to explain. 500 px wide images after the jump…
[ also, reminder that if you like music and you like chasejarvisLIVE, I’m hosting rising hip hip star RA Scion (of Common Market and Victor Shade) TODAY in 90 minutes at 10:30 pacific/1:30 eastern (GMT – 8). Interview with RA and Village Voice/Time Out/Stranger cultural critic Charles Mudede, plus RA performs LIVE at the end of the show. Hope to see you http://www.chasejarvis.com/live today….]A. With the foreground lady laying down…

OR.
B. With the foreground lady standing up…
Love to hear your thoughts.

Love the shots…
I like (B).
The girl in front is in proportion to the intent. I like the two guys standing at the left back wall verses (A) the one guy. Picture (B) the volume in the back ground compliments (holds) the girl’s strong focus in the front.
Using modern staging-brilliant! Adding splash of white and brown compliments the black western clothing and the grey in the girls dress (B). Love the combination. B-B-B
Sheek with Western…cool!
Depends on what you want to achieve. If this is a band, for example, and you are trying to emphasize the female lead singer then photo B is better because her large size and vertical positioning relative to the horizontally seated group immediately draws the eye. In photo A, she is horizontal too and, while closer to the camera, doesn’t stand out as much. Everyone is more equal in stature. Both photos look a little dark on my monitor but it needs calibration! 😉
B
There is just too much dead space on A. B is a cool shot. A is trying too hard.
Definitely B. Scene A, with him carrying the woman, the woman positioned (with arched back) looks to me as if she’s being sacrificed and the overall darkness of the scene puts into my head the idea that these are murderous rapists or something. That could just be me reading into it but I have a particular aversion to A.
B, with the woman standing up of course draws you to the woman first and you think, “Okay, sexy… then you look at the guy in the back holding the woman and you think, “oh, a night of raucous sex and drinking either after a show or before a party and these are his bad boy friends that you don’t wanna mess with.”
That’s my read, I vote B.
I would love to see a blend of both….here goes…
Use photo B as the primary photo with the subject standing. However the man holding the women….have him standing (as per Photo A), and have him stanidng (whilst holding her) in the spot of the two guys in Photo B (ie back left)…..and have those two guys sitting on the couch smoking with attitude.
I hope you can follow that.
I also like the lighting better on Photo B.
