American Photo Mag: Shoot It, Blog It, Share It

Hi Friends. Thinking about blogging? Today Miki Johnson, an outstanding editor at American Photo Magazine, posted to the editors blog called State of the Art, a story containing excerpts from an interview I gave two weeks ago about blogging. The story is entitled Shoot It, Blog It, Share It. The story also appears on another well-known print title's website at Popular Photography. FWIW, aside from my comments, there's some wonderful, interesting commentary from Alec Soth... read more ›

Gregory Colbert: Amazing Imagery Amidst An Inspiring Idea

If you're not familiar with the work of photographer and filmmaker Gregory Colbert, now's your chance. Without a doubt Colbert gives us some of the finest images ever recorded highlighting the interaction between animals, humankind, and the natural world. In his most recent exhibition entitled Ashes and Snow, Colbert shows us what it's like to be committed to a singular artistic vision. The 18 minute video below from a 2006 TEDTalk illustrates this vision through... read more ›

Hillmann Curtis Featuring David Carson, Milton Glaser And Others

I'm a sucker for great design and an even greater sucker for documentary films. What could be better, in that case, than a series of short (5 min) mini, profile documentaries about some of the greatest designers of our times, by one of the great designers of our times, Hillmann Curtis.Hillmann on David Carson. Hillmann on Milton Glaser. (Those are both hosted on the AIGA site.) The whole series can be found on Hillmann's site... read more ›

TEDTalks – Ray Kurzweil on the Future

I like to think of myself as a futurist. I enjoy living in the now (as much as we can do such a thing these days...) but I also enjoy thinking forward. I enjoy talking about the future too. Questions are often emailed and asked to me: "where's this headed, or that...?" While a lot of these questions are foggy ones about general "state of the industry stuff", and others are often technology or popular... read more ›

Russian Parkour

This circulated online ages ago, but I was recently sharing it with a friend and it made me realize that I should share it here... The first 2 minutes are moderately slow and a bit bizarre for a few seconds here and there, but hang on for the big stunts in minutes 2-8. It's the real deal. If you're needing incentive to watch this and you don't know what parkour is, check out the wiki... read more ›

New Zealand Film – Ata Whenua, Shadowland

So I'm back working in New Zealand again, this time on a month-long shoot for a substantial spring campaign. I've was in Queenstown (South Island) for quite some time --amazing place--the whole south island is truly one of the most spectactular places on earth. Picture the Swiss Alps mixing with Hawaii. Seriously. So anyway, the whole crew (there's around 20 of us) just moved to another substantially smaller town near the Fiordland National Park called... read more ›

True Story – Courage and the Art of Giving Back

Friends. Please take the time to read a touching story by Jill Waterman entitled "Off the Map" about a fantastic student I met while speaking at the Brooks Institute of Photography. Her name is Michelle Nolan. When I speak publicly, I often refer to the importance of giving back to your community. Michelle's story and how she affected the life of a young boy undergoing cancer treatment, Rusty Cwiklis, is truly inspiring. If you're looking... read more ›

Knights of Cydonia – Part II

So my good friend Ben Winters, VP at Uppercut Images sent me this response to my Aesthetics: Knights of Cydonia post at 2am after we missed connections at the DJ Krush show at Neumo's in Seattle. He wasn't down with using the 'comments' unfortunately, and wanted this off-list. I have subsequently negotiated his letting me post his sleepy 2am rant-but-on-point note here:Chase,As I sit awake now reading my email at 1 am after sleeping through... read more ›

Accidental Creative

Ever feel like your creative gas tank is struggling to stay full? When I bounce from project to project, shooting for one brand this week and another brand the next, I have to work hard at staying creatively disciplined so that I’m as fresh as possible. If you at all identify with this challenge, and you’re into podcasts, I’d recommend checking out Todd Henry’s Accidental Creative podcast (link should take you to iTunes podcast) and related... read more ›
