We all have aspirations. But are we ready to make the sacrifices, take the risks and do the work to make them happen?

Carol Jemison once remarked:

“You have something important to contribute, and you have to take the risk to contribute it.” - Carol Jemison Share on X

Letting the world know about your work is one of the first risks you take for your dreams.

Share your work with the world

In my book Creative Calling, I talked about the IDEA method of unlocking your potential – Imagine, Design, Execute and Amplify. It all starts from imagination. From there, it’s your job to design daily practices that support your vision. But I know you’ve checked those boxes, you’ve established a goal and designed a strategy to get there. Now, it’s time to launch (your next big thing).

But there’s a dirty secret I haven’t covered there – sharing your work with the world. Putting your work out there takes as much resilience as doing it. And as a creator, you need to build these muscles. It also allows you to observe how your work impacts people. Being willing to share your work and be your own biggest fan will set the tone for an exciting new chapter.

End the wait. Take the next step.

We all know that jittery feeling, that frenetic energy before putting something out into the world. The feeling of not being “good enough” prevents you from finally speaking with the world through your work. But as Kelly McGonigal explains in her book The Upside Of Stress, the reason you feel that way is, situations like those demand a lot of your time and energy and make you feel more concerned about the outcome or opportunity than the process.

When it was time to launch CreativeLive, we experienced it all- the fears, anxieties, and enthusiasm. However, looking back at the photos I clicked during that time reminds me that despite being crazy scared about the journey, we still made it through. Through continually creating and putting my work out into the world for the past two decades, I’ve learned that in hindsight, your fear seems a bit less scary.

So if you’ve ever felt less than qualified, know that this is natural. In fact, NOT feeling jitters is a a sign you don’t have enough skin in the game. It probably says you need to go back to the drawing board and align your actions with your dream.

3 Tips For When You’re Ready To Launch Your Dreams

  1. Be aware of yourself. Acknowledge when you’re feeling ashamed or inadequate.
  2. Share your work. Build an audience that is in tune with your ideas and beliefs and share your work with them. Don’t let feelings of shame or inadequacy cripple you.
  3. Cultivate support. Get people to support your cause and work.

It’s time to launch your next big thing- whether you want to change career paths, start a podcast, write a book or launch a new business, the time is now. If you want to dig deeper into this topic, check out CreativeLive’s class with Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life

Enjoy!
