Hey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.
Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction
The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.
The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.
Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

I think with the popularity of the 5D Mk II’s image Canon didn’t want to create a totally new camera. There are some new specs that are going to be very nice that the Mk II didn’t have, but I don’t think this will compete very well against the D800. I can’t see myself buying one any time soon if ever. I shoot with a 7D and will probably upgrade to the new 1DX, not the Mk III. If you really like the legacy of the 5D mk II though and have never shot with a DSLR at least you have a better 5D now.
Indifferent. The things I like about the MKIII is the attachable GPS that works with the 1DX and 7D too. The $1K+ difference over buying a MKII right now is not worth anything for someone who mostly shoots architecture and landscapes. More interested in the new flash and maybe picking up another MKII when the price may drop.
When are manufacturers going to put wifi in these things? Would make tethering so much easier.
Thats a $900 add on feature.
I shoot tethered via wifi with my 5dmkII, but its so inconsistent and unreliable and slow. I’d use USB, but i’ve managed to break the port from previous tethering escapades on set.
I know that Canon makes that device. I have only seen it maybe 3 years ago but thought maybe by now technology would have improved enough to make it viable choice over wired.
The usb port can be replaced by Canon, had mine replaced a while back don’t remember the cost but less than $200 I think. Sign up for CPS ( Canon pro service ) and it will speed up the repair time.
Hi,
Use an angled usb cable (like the one that comes with the lacie rikiki hard drive) and tape it to your 5D, it wouldn’t break anymore.
Use an EYEFI sd card to send the small jpeg to your computer and use the CF card to store them in the 5DMKIII. (now that there is two card in the 5DMKIII)
Imagination is a go start to find solution. 🙂
D.
There’s a thing called a “Jerk Stopper” you can get that attaches to your strap to prevent damaging the port when you (always) step on the tether.
We use the network port on the EFT (wifi bolt on transmitter) and its good for upto a 100 meters. I can’t recall how many times we’ve had the USB port on the body replaced. This allows for direct file transfer to the machine, but no remote control capabilities.
Metal construction kills RF.
Even Bluetooth
I couldn’t agree way more! They need to put some wireless tethering in this thing, via bluetooth or something!
“Fully indifferent,” whispered my D3S.
As soon as I can get some money from my exhibition of paintings, I will do my best to give my girlfriend a camera like this on her birthday … hopefully 🙂
Greetings 😉
