Take A Chance

Why is it that our society clearly celebrates the chance takers, yet we rarely encourage one another to take chances--especially those people closest to us? Almost all your favorite artists quit the traditional to pursue their dreams. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates dropped out of college to pursue their passions. Regardless if you wanna be in art, or film, or accounting, or a pro athlete, the story is the same. Go tell your husband that... read more ›

Nat Geo Photog Penny DeLosSantos and Foodista.com CEO Barnaby Dorfman Interview on YouTube

Like yesterday's repost of Jasmine Star, I've had a giant volume of requests asking to repost THIS recent episode of chasejarvisLIVE with National Geographic photographer of Food and Culture AND Barnaby Dorfman, Foodista.com's founder and CEO, to my YouTube channel. It's my pleasure to get it out there for those who missed it live. Penny DeLosSantos is a force of nature, having traveled the world over on assignments targeting food and culture. Hear... read more ›

Go Figure: New York Times Shooting Phantom Cameras

You recall that fancy 1000 frames per second cinema camera called the Phantom that I love so much (that was the feature camera from this project)? Well they've got a new one out...the Phantom Flex and it shoots 1250 fps now at full 1080 HD. Well the New York Times Magazine (that's right, editorial....) is shooting motion these days. Renowned Director of Photography there, Kathy Ryan, hired photographer Dewey Nicks to shoot some tennis stars.... read more ›

Is Inspiration Killing Creativity?

"The reality is that it's easier to be inspired than it is to create an original idea and we are hardwired to take the path of least resistance. It's easier to jump onto a design inspiration gallery site than it is to sit down with a blank sheet of paper and a pencil. It's easier to follow a pattern than it is to test-drive new options. It's easier to copy a style or idea that... read more ›

Evaluating Photographer Promotions with Heather Morton Art Buyer

How to promote your work and get noticed as a photographer is one of the more popular questions I get asked on an almost daily basis. I'll certainly be chiming in on this topic over the next few weeks as we explore this topic more in depth, but in the mean time, I thought I'd curate a few other opinions and asking some of my industry friends to chime in... That should help round out... read more ›

Off Topic. Unless You Like Video, Film, Music and Pop Culture…

Happy 4th of July weekend to USA readers. And to everyone, here's an "off topic" post, unless of course you like photo, film, music, or pop culture, and then this is right on topic. Following a wave of requests, this is a re-broadcast of a recent popular chasejarvisLIVE where I played host to two amazing and culturally relevant figures: emcee RA Scion and writer, filmmaker, and critic Charles Mudede. This video is a... read more ›

A Confidential Prospectus for a New Magazine

I received an inspiring gift from a friend the other day that I thought I'd share with you here. Chew on it over the weekend. Hopefully this resonates with the creative part in you as it did with me. I made me want to make stuff even more and share it with the world. It is a confidential prospectus for a new magazine:THE PURPOSE: To see life; to see the world; to eyewitness great events;... read more ›

Two Episodes of chasejarvisLIVE This Week!

I'm pumped to bring two new episodes of chasejarvisLIVE to your desktop this week. I hope you'll tune in to join me. First, tomorrow I'll be hosting my good friend, one-light guru, photo instructor, and the best beard around: Zack Arias. We're bringing Zack to Seattle for his creativeLIVE workshop, and I'm stealing an hour of his time before hand to talk shop in my studio. Think Barbara Walters meets Jon Stewart meets Photography (meets... read more ›

A Wakeup to the “Awe(some/ful) Future” of Indy Filmmaking

There's some fun and evocative smack talking going on over at Uproxx.com that caught my attention:"Granted, some of this is entirely the fault of the indie film scene itself, which is always rife with idiocy, and these days is basically celebrating incompetence because competence is just too Hollywood, man. The hot movement, mumblecore, seriously got its name from the fact that the filmmakers lacked the technical competence to point a microphone at an actor’s mouth.... read more ›

But What Have You Created?

Yes, I know you're a master of lighting, that you've used every light modifier known, that you've been going to PhotoPlus for ten years, that you were one of the first bloggers, you used Twitter before it was cool and you can gauge light temperature in your sleep. Yes, I know that you sit in front of your computer reminding other photographers that they're using the wrong gear for this job or that job. But... read more ›
