Hey there photo nerds. We’re all in this together and today Canon just added more fuel to the HdDSLR fire – the much-anticipated Canon 5D MK III is here. They made some interesting choices on pixel count, recording modes, etc. So let’s review the skinny of it all.
Here’s some highlighted specs:
_22.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
_3.2″ Clear View High Resolution LCD
_DIGIC 5+ Image Processor
_61-Point High Density AF
_Full HD 1080/30p and 720/60p Formats
_Built-In HDR and Multiple Exposure Modes
_Extended ISO Range (50-102400)
_Up to 6.0 FPS Continuous Still Mode Shooting
_Dual CF and SD Memory Card Slots
_Magnesium-Alloy Construction
The curve balls for the people I’m talking to? The no 1080 at 60p. Please note I HAVE NOT touched one of these cameras – unlike Nikon, Canon doesn’t trust me with a 10-foot pole and I get no advance copies of these cameras.
The look? She’s small and sleek. Click thru a range of images of the camera via the above tabs.
Now, not unlike what I’ve done with the recent launch of the Nikon D800 and Nikon D4…rather than me spouting off about having played with the system or telling you what your feelings about this system should be, I’m turning the tables back to you. What’s your take? Love, hate, indifferent? Insights? I know that Canon folks, including, ahem, Chuck Westfall read this blog, so your comments on this post – glowing or otherwise – might help inform Canon and the rest of the camera manufacturers about what your thinking…

It’s the update almost all the 5D mk II users were waiting for: finally a real AF system, weather sealing and a decent burst rate, we even got (as it’s said) two more f-stops compared to the 5D mk II. And I’m glad that Canon didn’t go for the big megapixels – it’s just not necessary for most of us and if you really need more pixels then go and get a Hasselblad or some PhaseOne digiback.
Pricing is steep indeed but it’s not really a surprise if you remember the days when the 5D mk II was released. It will drop when those mk II models are out of stock so wait until the end of the year and the price might drop even below $ 3.000.
For me it’s all I wanted. Of course, a second CF slot would have been better than that SD slot but except of that: I’m fine with it. It’s a buy!
YOU SAID IT, it’s what everyone cry about with 5d11 and canon went off the reviews. they build the 5diii from all the canon shooters and now i hate reading all the negative crap about what canon didn’t or what should have been done.what more does everyone want ,you got better IQ,AF,ISO,BUILD,WEATHER SEAL,100 VIEW,DEPTH BUTTON MOVED,MORE FPS,AND MORE. How can people say it’s not that much of and upgrade, and there disappointed.
And for all the Nikon fan boys out there comparing the d800 to the 5diii before the show has started, you better hope your not trying to find a used d700 next year, 36 mp not going to have the low iso performance.
The better performance at higher ISO ratings seems to be the only compelling reason I’d consider upgrading. New processor is nice and I’m always for improved auto focus. But I’ve had such great results with the Mark II I don’t see enough of a leap to justify an upgrade, at least on paper. To me, that’s a little disappointing.
I think it’s quite a nice update from the Mark 2. But I think some people were expecting revolutionary not evolutionary. The resolution of the Mark 2 is fine for my needs, so I am quite content with 22mp in the Mark 3. I’ll be upgrading for the couple stops better low light performance (very nice for indoor wedding shots), better auto focus, more auto-bracketing options and faster frame rate.
I’m sure there were people expecting revolutionary but that’s the same with any product release. I think the rest of us were realistically expecting more than just slight evolution with revolutionary sized pricing.
Obviously, Canon has put great effort into both the C300 and the D1X. This lesser 5D mk III is a nice update and lots of peeps will be half pleased. What I’m wondering about is the “real” update body for the 1Ds mk lll. Canon clearly has a new camera body planned for that D3x killer position. And if Nikon or their vendor Sony hasn’t changed their shared hidtory we will see a D4x. So where is it? The 1Ds mk lV????
Enquiring minds and all.
Regardless I’ve preordered the lot. Business is business.
And boy is it a effing pain to compose rational thought on this iPhone…
Definitely seems to be more of an “evolutionary” product rather than a “revolutionary” product. After the Mk2 was released there wasn’t too many specs to improve on. It seems like everything has been tightened up. Shooting is a little fast, compatibility for newer accessories and video improvements (which I’m guessing was one of the key focuses, judging by the dual memory slots and extra frame rates). From a pure photography standpoint the Mk2 was so good that IMO there wasn’t that much further to go. I’m sure it’s a huge leap for a videographer though.
Now sounds like a great time to get a MarkII (yes sadly I only have the 5D and missed the whole MarkII revolution) and wait for the next revolutionary edition.
