We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood -- it ebbs. We... read more ›

I didn't grow up dreaming to be a photographer. I didn't assist for anybody. I just started doing it... The way I do it is just the way I do it.Beautiful piece here about Scott Schumann, aka The Sartorialist. In the unlikely event you're not familiar with his work, he's an ex-fashion guy turned street photographer. Plenty to be learned here for any creative discipline. Brilliant, simple style. Confident in his vision. Living... read more ›

From my early childhood I have a memory of my parents shooting a couple photos during the holiday season, a couple more during my birthday party, maybe ten or twenty on the family vacation and then--when the roll of 24 exposures was used up--they'd pop the film outta the back of the camera and throw it in the drawer. Usually after about another month or two they'd re-discover the roll. And they'd run it down... read more ›

I love how opinionated this community is. There is no right, no wrong - just a good bit of discussion... In case you're lost, I promised to follow up this earlier popular Which Photo is Better A or B? post. The discussion on these is always spirited--in this case the post received more than 1000 comments in 24 hours--of which I read them all. A breakdown by numbers, my particular take (it was different than... read more ›

Quick diversion from the normal banter here... What goes well with the holidays and photo books? Wine and chocolate. Wine and chocolate? Hopefully you're aware of my latest photo book project, Seattle 100: Portrait of City (hardback 10x10" 240 pages, 300 photographs - all my proceeds go to non-profit www.4culture.org). I've alluded to it in some posts before, but as a side show, we got together with a few friends and made some very tasty... read more ›

To want. To be ambitious. To want to be successful is not enough. That's just desire... In this 90 second clip, the actor Kevin Spacey gets to the core of what it takes. Some amazingly simple, powerful words for us all to live by. Happy Monday.

FINAL UPDATE: Thank you, thank you, thank you! Together we raised $5000 -- enough to build a fresh water well that will serve 250 families forever--and we did it in under 18 hours. Who makes this possible? YOU and http://www.charitywater.org. Please check them out and continue to give. Consider asking your friends and family to re-direct what they'd normally spend on your birthday this year and send it to charity: water. 100% (yes you read... read more ›

Whenever Michael Jordan gets on the golf course and his friends ask the stakes of the game--how much money they're betting against one another--rumor has it that his stock response is: "Whatever makes you nervous." That's what you should bet on yourself, every time. Not what makes you comfortable, but what makes you nervous. Your muscles get stronger by running, jumping, lifting weights, by stressing them out, by pushing them, not by sitting on the... read more ›

You know Jeremy Cowart. He's an amazing portrait, entertainment, and travel photographer from Nashville - and also the founder of the great Help-Portrait. Lucky for us, we're dragging him up to Seattle for another smash-tastically sweet episode of chasejarvisLIVE tomorrow. I'll sit down with Jeremy for 90 minutes and talk shop. I'm banking that we'll learn how, after shifting from graphic design just a few years ago, how he has enjoyed dramatic success shooting music,... read more ›

The Kuwait Times, Gizmodo and Engadget have reported that the government of Kuwait has outlawed DSLR cameras. "The Ministries of Information, Social Affairs and Finance (hello, 1984!) have collectively decided to ban the use of the chunky shooters in public places, except where it can be shown that it's for journalistic purposes." - Engadget. ---UPDATE---- The Kuwait Times Newspaper has rescinded this story. Go figure. ___________ This ban reportedly affects tourists too, so if you're... read more ›
