Think You Don’t Need to Focus? Think Again.

Been tons of chatter online about the Lytro camera the last few weeks. In case you've been living under a rock or too busy to notice, then you'll be happy to know that the new Lytro camera allows you to select focus AFTER you shoot the photograph. AMAZING technology developed at Stanford by Ren Ng. Just like you can change the white balance after capture when shooting RAW, well now you can put those striking... read more ›

By the time you're reading this, I've just announced a new tablet form of Photoshop called Photoshop Touch (coming to iOS!!). As I sit here running through the script for the show that's live in 5 minutes, I stumbled upon a thought that is both sweet and bizarre. It's this: The psd image... read more ›

Gear Details: How We Shot “Dasein: Art of Being” Documentary

NYC street doc setup
Hey friends.  Erik the video guy here. We’ve had a bunch of YOUR questions come in about what gear/process/technique we used to make the Dasein docu-short we posted a couple days ago so I thought I’d chime in with a quick gear- and technique-specific follow up on how this film was made.  First, Chase was the director on the project but wanted to remain focused simply on the overall look and feel. Plus, since he... read more ›

Conversation with Vincent Laforet on Gear, Career, Vision and More

The following is a transcription excerpt from a conversation a while back on #cjLIVE between yours truly and my dear friend, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer and filmmaker Vincent Laforet where we discuss gear, professional career, creative vision and more. We've got it on video (link at end of this post), but I think the transcript is nice because you can skim the conversation in just a couple minutes. And there are some nuggets in there... read more ›

Thanks to the couple hundred of you who took a stab at breaking down the image I nabbed of Prince Manvendra [note that this thumbnail here is a crop, not the final...go to the original post to see that one]. A couple of you nailed it to varying degrees. Here’s my breakdown of the image: First, one thing I think you'd find interesting with this image is that I had less than 5 minutes including... read more ›

How To Build a Cyclorama Wall With [Mostly Naked] Ashley

Looking for a weekend project for your photo studio? Alrighty then. Thoroughly amused at the approach taken here in this vid by folks at EyeHandy, having mostly naked model Ashley showing us how to make a cyc wall. Funny though, if you can get past the scantily clad builder using power tools (not sure why you'd want to do that...but....), the truth is that the actual info here on how to build a... read more ›

Olympus is Talking Shit About Your Camera Phone

Seems that a new guerrilla campaign by Olympus in Australia is talking shit about the "rubbish" photos from your camera phone. "If you're camera also sends text messages, that will explain why your photos are rubbish." Plaques in select Aussie cities bearing the above slogan have been pasted to the street and other urban environs, with the url GetARealCamera.com linking to Olympus. Personally, the message bugs... read more ›
